WHEREAS, the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City hereto-
fore adopted a resolution expressing its opposition to the purchase
of the apartment building known as Sunset Towers, located at
40 South 9th East Streets in Salt Lake City, by the University of
Utah, for the reasons that said property would become tax exempt,
would be in competition with privately owned property, and would
favor a certain class of persons by providing apartments at a
reduced rental; and
WHEREAS, copies of said resolution were forwarded to the
United States Department of Health, Welfare and Education and to
the Board of Regents of the University of Utah; and
WHEREAS, it appears that the Board of Regents are still con-
sidering the purchase of said property:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
OF SALT LAKE CITY that said Board does hereby request Governor
Calvin L. Rampton to use his influence to prevent the acquisition
of said property by the University of Utah because of the loss of
taxes and the unfair competition which a purchase would cause and
also because of the oft expressed and well known shortage of state
funds now available for university purposes.
The City Recorder is hereby directed to deliver a copy of this
resolution to Governor Rampton and a copy to Donald B. Holbrook,
Chairman of the Board of Regents.
Passed by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City, Utah,
this 16th day of January, 1968.
