Expressing appreciation to Bernard Barnes for his devoted, faithful and heroic service as a school crossing guard and commending him for his heroic action of April I3, 1973, in "saving the lives of two slahool boys at the crossing of First South and 11th 'East Streets. Barker Harmsen � � Harrison Phillips RESOLUTION Result f / RESOLUTION OF APPRECIATION WHEREAS, Bernard Barnes retired from W. H. Bintz Company after twenty four and one-half years of service and became a crossing guard four years ago; and WHEREAS, Mr. Barnes is stationed as a crossing guard at First South and llth East Street, which crossing is the scene of many racing cars, frequent accidents, and constant near-misses; thus being a very hazardous school crossing zone; and WHEREAS, on April 13, 1973, Mr. Bernard Barnes did, through an act of heroism and with quickness of thought and reflexes, literally snatch two boys from in front of a speeding automobile, thereby averting a certain tragedy; and WHEREAS, Mr. Barnes reacted swiftly, heroically and decisively to save the lives of David Shoemaker and Don Swenson, who were on their way home from Wasatch School; and WHEREAS, Salt Lake City and its residents owe Mr. Barnes a debt of gratitude for his devoted service and for his willingness to place his own life in danger to protect the children for whom he is responsible at the crosswalks in the school zone. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS OF SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, that it does hereby express to Mr. Bernard Barnes its sincere and deep appreciation for his faithful and heroic service to the City and to its inhabitants and does further wish to commend him for his heroic action of April 13, 1973.
