/ RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, the State of Utah and the Federal Highway Admini-
stration are beginning construction of I-215 on the southwest
quadrant of Salt Lake City; and
WHEREAS, Salt Lake City has cited the need for certain
modifications in the current design of I-215 in the southwest and
northwest quadrants of the City to facilitate the flow of traffic
as the western portion of the city continues to grow and develop;
and
WHEREAS, interchanges are not currently designed on I-215
between 2100 South and I-80 or at 4800 West and I-80, and this
greatly hampers access and traffic circulation in the southwest
and northwest quadrants of the City; and
WHEREAS, interchanges at California Avenue and I-215 and at
4800 West and I-80 would greatly alleviate and facilitate the
traffic flow of the southwest and northwest portions of the city;
and
WHEREAS, the present design specifications of I-215 for
overpasses at California and Indiana Avenues are insufficient and
incompatible with the anticipated traffic patterns and growth of
Salt Lake City; and
WHEREAS, the State of Utah by and through the Utah Depart-
ment of Transportation has agreed to request approval from the
Federal Highway Works Administration to modify the present design
of I-215 to provide for widening of overpasses at California and
Indiana Avenues to allow for 64 feet of pavement width, and
subject to a favorable benefit/cost analysis, to request approval
for an interchange at California Avenue, provided Salt Lake City
agrees to construct and improve said streets between Redwood Road
and Pioneer Road within a reasonable time after the completion of
I-215, and provided Salt Lake City supplies projected traffic
planning data sufficient to justify such modification,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Salt Lake City
Council hereby expresses its opinion and belief that interchanges
at California Avenue and I-215 and 4800 West and I-80 and
widening of the over passes at Indiana and California Avenues to
allow for 64 feet of pavement width are necessary to provide
additional access, traffic circulation, and police and fire
protection in the southwest and northwest quadrants of Salt Lake
City.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that Salt Lake City will supply the
necessary projected land use and traffic planning data to the
State of Utah in support of the City 's request for said
modifications in the design of I-215 and I-80. The Council
further resolves to give said projects high priority and to
proceed with the design, right of way acquisition and the
construction of Indiana and California Avenues and 500 South
Street, according to the attached schedules, in order to make
these requested design modifications eligible for Federal
participation.
