WHEREAS, the Union Pacific Railroad Company has maintained
passenger train service for many years between Omaha, Nebraska,
and Los Angeles, California, by Trains Nos. 5 and 6, thereby
providing a valuable service to the citizens of Utah and Salt
Lake City; and
WHEREAS, over the years the residents of Salt Lake City and
other intermediate communities in the State of Utah have come to
rely on such train service which has contributed greatly to the
economy and convenience of the citizens of said communities; and
WHEREAS, the Union Pacific Railroad Company now proposes to
discontinue passenger service between Omaha, Nebraska, and Los
Angeles, California, by eliminating from service Trains Nos. 5
and 6, and has applied to the Interstate Commerce Commission for
permission to discontinue said daily passenger trains; and
WHEREAS, the discontinuance of said trains would seriously
curtail passenger train service to Salt Lake City and the inter-
mediate communities in the State of Utah and would result in
great economic loss, inconvenience and hardship to the citizens
thereof.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE. IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
OF SALT LANE CITY, UTAH, on behalf of the citizens of said city,
that said Board does hereby object to the discontinuance of said
passenger train service between Omaha, Nebraska and Los Angeles,
California, and respectfully petitions the Interstate Commerce
Commission to deny the request for discontinuance of Union Pacific
Trains Nos. 5 and 6 now providing passenger service between said
terminal points.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be
transmitted to the Interstate Commerce Commission in Washington,
D. C. and the entire Utah congressional delegation.
Passed by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City, Utah,
this 26th day of June, 1969.
