WHEREAS, it is deemed -itting and proper that the Board of Com-
missioners of Salt Lake City should adopt for the city a motto as indicative
of the position which Salt Lake City occupies historically and in its rela-
tion to the expansion and development of the great western frontier; and,
WHEREAS, on July 24, 1847, the first contingent of pioneers entered the
valley of the Great Salt Lake and camped within the area now comprising Salt
Lake City, travel weary and anxiously looking for the haven they were seeking;
and,
WHEREAS, their leader Brigham Young, put all their anxieties at rest
with these historic words: "This is the place"; and,
WHEREAS, Salt Lake City thenceforth became the center to which many
thousands of people came seeking a place of refuge and a place to live; and,
WHEREAS, Salt Lake City has fulfilled and, is still fulfilling, the des-
tiny so prophetically pronounced in "This is the place":
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS OF SALT
LAKE CITY that the words "This is the place" most appropriately describes
and indicates Salt Lake City's unique and historic position in the settlement
and development of the great intermountain region.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that "This is the place", be, and the same hereby
is, adopted as the official motto of Salt Lake City.
Passed by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City this 27th
