Utah Dear Sir: On July 8, 1970, the Board of City Commissioners passed RESOLUTION NO. 36 requesting the Utah State Legislature to assume the respons- ibility of fixing the salaries of all elected city and county officials and that all legislation necessary to achieve this objective be approved by the Utah State Legislature at its next regular session in 1971. The City Commission has directed you to present this resolution to the Utah State Legislature inasmuch as you are the City's Liaison Officer. WHEREAS, prior to 1963 the Utah State Legislature reserved to itself the right to establish the salaries to be paid to elected city officials; and WHEREAS, prior to 1969 the Utah State Legislature reserved to itself the right to fix the maximum salaries to be paid to elected county officials; and WHEREAS, the present statutes permit elected officials of both cities and counties to increase their own salaries during the terms of office to which they were elected following a public hearing thereon; and WHEREAS, the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City does not believe it is proper for public officials to raise their own salaries and is opposed to the present statutory method of increasing salaries of elected city and county officials; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS OF SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, that the Legislature of the State of Utah be requested to again assume the responsibility of fixing the salaries of all elected city and county officials and that all legislation necessary to achieve this objective be approved by the Utah Legislature at its next regular session in 1971. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Governor of the State of Utah, the Utah Legislative Council, the presiding officers of the present Utah Senate and House of Representa- tives and the presiding officers of the Utah Senate and House of Representatives as selected for the regular 1971 Legislative Session.
