RESOLUTION OF COMMENDATION
WHEREAS, on Saturday, May 20, 1976, the Utah Symphony and the
Salt Lake Mormon Tabernacle Choir will unite in a historical Bicen-
tennial concert in Salt Lake City; and
WHEREAS, this will be the first joint performance by these two
nationally prominent musical organizations; and
WHEREAS, the Utah Symphony and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir have
brought great distinction and recognition to themselves, Salt Lake
City and the State of Utah; and
WHEREAS, the three conductors: Maurice Abravanel, musical con-
ductor and director of the Utah Symphony; Dr. Crawford Gates,
composer and conductor of the Beloit, Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra,
and composer of the work, "A New Morning, Symphony No. 4," to have
its world premiere at the concerts, and Dr. Jerold D. Ottley, director
of the Salt Lake Mormon Tabernacle Choir, have given outstanding
service, not only to the patrons of Salt Lake City, but to the entire
musical world; and
WHEREAS, the three conductors have amply demonstrated their dedi-
cation to excellence and have moved and inspired countless citizens
with their mastery, artistry and untiring personal commitment to music
as an ennobling element in the human spirit;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARL OF COMMISSIONERS OF
SALT LAKE CITY, that it does hereby, on its own behalf and on the behalf
of the citizens of Salt Lake City, commend these three musicians and
their musical organizations for the many years of meritorious service,
performances and deep sense of civic involvement. The Commission also
expresses its best wishes for success in the upcoming Bicentennial
concerts and succeeding performances.
Passed by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City, Utah, this
26th day of May, 1976.
