RESOLUTION
Result . . .
WHEREAS, it has been reported that the University of Utah is con-
sidering the purchase of the apartment building known as Sunset Towers
located at 40 South 9th East in Salt Lake City, for use as student
housing; and,
WHEREAS, said building is located off the university campus and
its acquisition by the university would make the property tax exempt and
thus deprive Salt Lake City and other taxing units of taxes payable under
private ownership; and,
WHEREAS, said building is designed for family living and would be
used principally by married couples and not for the usual dormitory pur-
poses and would be in competition with privately owned apartment buildings
furnishing like accommodations; and,
WHEREAS, ownership and operation of said apartment building by the
university would be another extension of a governmental agency into an
area which is traditionally and fundamentally reserved to and occupied
by private enterprise; and,
WHEREAS, the leasing of apartments to persons at reduced rates
simply on the basis of attending the university would result in the
creation of another group favored above other groups similarly situated:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS OF SALT
LAKE CITY, UTAH, that said Board does hereby express its opposition to
the university acquiring said building and said Board hereby respectfully
requests that the university do not acquire taxable property outside the
university campus for the purpose of providing housing for its students.
Passed by the Board of Commissioners this 12th day of December,
