WHEREAS, John E. Birkes has been a member of the Salt Lake City Fire
Department for the past 25 years, commencing his public service on August
1, 1947; and
WHEREAS, John E. Birkes has served in many capacities in said depart-
ment, being advanced to a Fire Fighter of the 1st Grade on April 1, 1956;
and
WHEREAS, during his long tenure of service he has served with great
dependability, fidelity and reliability, faithfully and ably fulfilling
every assignment given him; and
WHEREAS, he has long demonstrated a progressive attitude and kept
himself in excellent physical condition in order to meet all emergencies
and accomplish any task to which he may be assigned; and
WHEREAS, John E. Birkes demonstrated unusual skill in the handling
of tools and equipment appertaining to the fire service and possessed a
remarkable ability to meet unusual conditions; and
WHEREAS, John E. Birkes has retired from his position with the Salt
Lake City Fire Department effective August 3, 1972;
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved by the Board of Commissioners of Salt
Lake City that it does hereby express to John E. Birkes, on behalf of the
Board and on behalf of the residents of Salt Lake City, their sincere
appreciation and gratitude for his devoted, efficient and capable service
for the Fire Department of Salt Lake City and the residents thereof. Said
Board extends to him its best wishes for happiness and success in the days
to come.
The City Recorder is hereby directed to deliver to John E. Birkes a
copy of this Resolution of appreciation.
Passed by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City, Utah, this
