Wells, Utah's first Governor, departed this life on March 12th, 1938, and his departure is deeply felt by the citizens of Salt Lake City and the members of the Board of Com- missioners of said city. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by said Board of Commission- ers of Salt Lake City that appreciation for the notable, public career and splendid character of Heber M. Wells be expressed for and on behalf of Salt Lake City by the members of the Board of Commis- sioners of said city. Heber M. Wells was born on August 11, 1859, in Salt Lake City. In 1882 he was appointed recorder of Salt Lake City, which position he occupied until 1890. In 1887 he was selected as the secretary of the constitutional convention and in 1895 served as a member of that convention. At the age of.36 years he was elected Governor of Utah in the year of 1895, which position he filled with honor and ability for nine years. In 1905 he retired to private life until 1913, when he was elected Commissioner of Parks and Public Property. In 1915 he filled the position of Commissioner of Streets and Public Improvements. In 1917 he was a special officer in the United States Internal Revenue Bureau and thereafter in 1920 held a position with the Bureau of Efficiency of the United States government. In the year itif 1921 he again retired to private life and in 1933 retired from active employment. The position of Govern- or Heber M. Wells in history is secure. Salt Lake City and its citizens extend sympathy to the family and his large circle of friends. AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be spread upon the minutes of the Board of Commissioners and that a copy be -2 spread upon the minutes of the Board of Commissioners and that a ! copy be forwarded to Mrs. Wells and members of the family.
