/ UTAH STARS SUPPORT
WHEREAS, the performance of the Utah Stars Professional Basketball
Team, located in Salt Lake City since 1970, has been of the highest
quality and has given them nationwide recognition and honor, and has
brought them numerous honors in the sports field and has led them to
the highest team position in the American Basketball Association; and
WHEREAS, the Utah Stars have not only brought great recognition
and prominence to the City of Salt Lake and the State of Utah, but has
provided great enjoyment and entertainment for many thousand of resi-
dents of the City and of the State; and
WHEREAS, the location of the Stars in the Salt Palace has added
greatly to success of that facility, which continues to play a major
role in the development and revitalization of the downtown business
district; and
WHEREAS, the location of the Stars in Salt Lake City has brought
an average of $60,000 annually in sales tax resources, $250,000
annually in income taxes, and between six and sixteen million dollars
into the State's economy in revenue generated through Stars games and
activities, as well as the intangible value of entertainment and
enjoyment; and
WHEREAS, the present owner of the Utah Stars has determined that
it is necessary for him to sell his interest in the basketball team;
and
WHEREAS, a group of Utah businessmen have pledged three million
dollars to purchase the Stars and keep them in Utah; and
WHEREAS, that purchase agreement is contingent on the marketing
of 7,000 season tickets by July 25, 1974, as a demonstration of
community support for the team; and
WHEREAS, the Salt Lake City Board of Commissioners unanimously
agree that it is in the best interest of the community and the State
to keep the Stars in Salt Lake City.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS OF
SALT LAKE CITY, that the members of the City Commission strongly urge
all of the residents of Salt Lake City to indicate their support for
the Utah Stars, through letters to the Utah Stars Basketball Club,
at the Salt Palace, Stars Avenue and West Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah
84101, or by telephoning their pledge to purchase two or more season
tickets for the 1974-75 basketball season.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Salt Lake City Business Community
be urged to participate as corporate entities in this effort to keep
the Stars in Utah, through the purchase of season tickets for use by
their corporation or business.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the individuals conducting this effort
to retain the Stars in Utah be commended for their interest in preserving
so valuable an asset to the community and to the State as the Utah Stars.
Passed by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City, Utah, this
23rd day of July, 1974.
