WHEREAS, passenger train service has been provided for many years between San Francisco and Oakland, California, and Chicago, Illinois, through Ogden, Utah, by trains Nos. 101 and 102, known as the "City of San Francisco"; and WHEREAS, the Southern Pacific Company operates said "City of San Francisco" between the West Coast and Ogden, Utah; and WHEREAS, residents of Utah, Nevada and California have come to rely on said trains for daily passenger service; and WHEREAS, these passenger trains contribute to the economy of these areas and to the convenience of the citizens of communities and states served by said trains; and WHEREAS, the Southern Pacific Company has petitioned the Interstate Commerce Commission to reduce the daily service offered by the "City of San Francisco" so as to provide only a tri-weekly service; and WHEREAS, the reduction in service by these trains would leave Salt Lake City and other communities between Ogden, Utah, and San Francisco and Oakland, California, without adequate daily train service; and WHEREAS, this would result in economic loss and inconvenience to said communities and their residents; and WHEREAS, this reduction in service would not only adversely affect those who are residents in these western areas but also deprive non-residents traveling to and from these areas of this important daily service provided by the "City of San Francisco"; and WHEREAS, daily passenger service is in the public interest, convenience and necessity on this important transcontinental "Overland" route; and WHEREAS, the reduction in service of these trains between Ogden, Utah, and the West Coast could adversely affect the entire run of the "City of San Francisco" in making it more difficult to provide daily service between Ogden, Utah, and Chicago, Illinois, over the route of the Union Pacific Railroad Company from Ogden, Utah to Omaha, Nebraska, and over the line of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. >Iaul & Pacific Railroad Company from Omaha, Nebraska to Chicago, Ill:inois; and WHEREAS, the reduction of the daily service offered by the "City of San Francisco" to a tri-weekly service might cause a further deterioration of this service and thereby impair its future opera- tion contrary to the public interest. -2- NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS OF SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, that said Board does hereby object to the reduction in service of the "City of San Francisco", Trains Nos. 101 and 102, from a daily service to tri-weekly service, and respect- fully petitions the Interstate Commerce Commission to deny the request of the Southern Pacific Company for said change.
