RESOLUTION
Result . . .
WHEREAS, the Utah State Department of Highways has proposed the
closing of the viaduct on North Temple Street for a period of at
least one year to facilitate highway and viaduct enlargement; and
WHEREAS, such closure will impose an economic burden upon the
businesses along North Temple Street which should be borne by the
entire populace of the State; and
WHEREAS, the additional expense involved in maintaining two
opposing lanes of traffic across said viaduct during the construc-
tion period required for such improvements would be equally borne
by all citizens of the State; and
WHEREAS, the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City, Utah,
strongly feels that the proposed action of the State Department of
Highways is inimical to the interests of the residents of Salt Lake
City and imposes an unreasonable financial burden upon a relatively
few persons;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
OF SALT LAKE CITY that it vigorously opposes the proposed action
of the State of Utah Department of Highways in closing the North
Temple overpass during construction of new highway improvements
in that area and sincerely requests that the State of Utah and the
Federal Government do all in their respective powers to recognize
the inherent unfairness in the proposed closure of said viaduct to
traffic during construction and adopt an alternative method of con-
struction which will permit two-way traffic over said viaduct during
construction with the additional expense incident thereto being
shared by all the people of the State of Utah and of the United
States of America with respect to federal funds which may be autho-
rized in connection with this project.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be delivered
to the Utah State Department of Highways, the Honorable Calvin L.
Rampton, Governor of the State of Utah, and to all members of the
United States Congress from the State of Utah.
Passed by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City, Utah,
this 5th day of October, 1971.
