RESOLUTION
Result .
WHEREAS, the cost of elections including the printing,
distribution, and control of ballots as well as the processing of
the election and tallying of the ballots has increased to such an
extent that it places a great burden upon the taxpayers of Salt
Lake City; and
WHEREAS, it is the belief of Salt Lake City that those who
seek to be candidates should be called upon to contribute toward
the expenses incurred by Salt Lake City in the conduct of the
election and that it is not unreasonable for the candidate to be so
required; and
WHEREAS, it is the desire of Salt Lake City to prevent an
indiscriminate scramble for office and the wholesale filing of
petitions regardless of fitness, qualifications or good faith intent
to be a bonafide candidate; and
WHEREAS, it is also the desire of Salt Lake City to insure
that the candidates make a showing of their good faith in announc-
ing their candidacy,
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved by the Board of Commissioners
of Salt Lake City, Utah:
That the legislature of the State of Utah be, and hereby is,
requested on behalf of the citizens of Salt Lake City to enact
legislation to provide for filing fees to be paid by a candidate
filing a nomination paper or acceptance for any city elective posi-
tion. Said legislation to be similar to that provided for in
Section 20-3-14, Utah Code Annotated, 1953.
Be it further resolved that this resolution be sent to the
Honorable Richard C. Howe, Speaker of the House, Utah State Legislature.
