I am sure the members of the Colt Lake City lour scion this morn-
,
i.ns feel constrained to represent the reorle of our great municip.lity in
conveying to Deputy tecorder and Frs. frank .. Shields, the heartfelt
I4 sorrow that is ide-spread in our city for the grievous loss that is theirs
in the tragic death on the field of battle, of their son, Leo.
If
rilli.r,t, young officer, exemplifying the courageous and undaunted
spirit of _merican youth, at its best, he asked no soft berth in the per-
ils of the cruelest war of all. history. 'father, he was in the very fore-
front of his battle-line, re:uesting no odds, yet porsonifyin the noble
and the valorcus in his every thought and. action.
Yet this tragic killing of his fellow-man, even in a war whose provo-
cation was great, was difficult fortnis capable your- doctor of philosophy,
whose extensive training. and fine scholarship had led his interests to
cultural fields. Se had yearned foi• the time when he mitnt devote his
energy-ics to constructive pursuits and, in very deed, to the practice of
the arts of peace.
I
To have reared so fine and noble a son as Lieutenant a.nd Doctor Leo
shields is a great honor to his esteemed parents. Saddened as they are
today by the receipt of the news rrom the '.ar De-e.rt:-ent of their bey's
death, after his being announced as missing for many months, they :rust
still find some solace in the illustrious and honors le limner in which
t:.eir son bore their name. He was, indeed, loyal to the royal that -as
in him by his fine heritage.
Salt Lake City is proud of the brilliant record of this splendid boy,
as a student, a doctor of philosophy, and as an officer. 3a.lt Take City
is also grateful for the family in which so cherished, noble and capable
a young citizen was reared.
"While we realize that no words of ours can actually lessen the
anguish which the parents feel at this tine, do want our beloved as—
sociate, Deputy :recorder, and his wife, "rs. Frank A. Shields, to know
of our deep sympathy for them.
Therefore, on behalf of the City Cormission and the people of Salt
Take City, I, Earl J. Glade, !ayor, do express our sorrow to the bereaved
parents and earnestly pray that they may be comforted in this great loss.
Yay their grief be softened by the thought that they shall always have the
memory of a brilliant and noble young son who was true to himself, to them,
to his country, and to his God.
IN :tITT'GSS ?7fili.I,OF, I have attached nay name this 5th day of June,
