Garn, was fatally injured in an automobile accident on August 17, 1976; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Garn had devoted her life selflessly to her family, her community and to supporting Senator Garn in the rigorous demands of his public office; and WHEREAS, she was revered by those who knew her well as a warm, compassionate, loving and stately woman of noble bearing, who was greatly and widely respected, admired and loved; and WHEREAS, in her early passing, the residents of Salt Lake City, the State of Utah and, indeed, the entire nation has suffered a sadden- ing loss; and WHEREAS, the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City and the entire City constituency of former Mayor Garn are profoundly grieved and saddened; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF SALT LAKE CITY COMMISSIONERS, that it does hereby express on its own behalf and on behalf of the residents of Salt Lake City, their sense of loss and their most sincere sympathy to Senator Garn, their children and relatives in this hour of bereavement. The City Commission does pray that Senator Garn and his family may be consoled in this hour of grief; may they be comforted by the deep religious convictions which they shared with Hazel and with the knowledge that their many friends and, indeed, all of the residents of Salt Lake City share their loss. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be delivered to Senator E. J. Garn and his family as a token of our sympathy and as an expression of the community's support, love and appreciation for the Garn family; may they each be comforted and afforded inner peace by that which is eternal and abides and by the knowledge that others care and share in their bereavement.
