WHEREAS, it is important to preserve the significant
historical, architectural and cultural aspects of our local
heritage in order to promote the economic and general welfare
of the people of Salt Lake City and the public generally; and
WHEREAS, it is the intention of the Board of Commissioners
to preserve and enhance the environmental qualities of historic
neighborhoods and to foster civic pride and beauty; and
WHEREAS, it is equally important to support the stimulus
to business provided by the City's cultural and aesthetic
attractions to tourists and visitors; and
WHEREAS, the lack of design considerations in public
improvement projects within historic districts may result in
missed opportunities for creation of amenity areas in Salt Lake
City, departure of private investment to other areas of the
valley and general damage to the form and image of the City;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Commissioners
of Salt Lake City, Utah, as follows:
1. That it shall hereafter be the policy of the City that
all City departments and agencies responsible for public facilities
investments, design and construction within an historic district
should be involved in the application of design strategies to pre-
serve and enhance the visual character of such historic sites
and districts as are designated on the City register of historic
places.
2. The City departments and agencies are hereby directed,
as a matter of formal procedure, to coordinate and consult with
the Historical Landmarks Committee in order that proposed public
improvements regarding any project within any historical district
will reflect design objectives. This coordination will insure
design quality in historic areas as a means for enhancing local
cultural assets, improving the City's physical image and as an
incentive for private sector response.
Passed by the Board of Commissioners of Salt Lake City,
