City fire Department, departed this life on October 6th, 1926,
having reached the age of 67 years.

ers of Salt Lake City hereby expresses the appreciation of its mem-
bers for the life and services of a most useful Fublic servant.

of age, "Chief Bywater has been connected with the ..alt 'Lake City
fire Department; as a member, captain in charge of a station, as-
sistant chief, superintendent of fire alarm system and finally
Chief of the department. Fe had seen the department grow from
small volunteer beginnings until it has become one of the most
modern and efficient fire departments in the United „tates. Its
efficiency and reputation in no small degree is due to the splendid
and persistent efforts of Chief Bywater. Fe was continuously at
the head of the department from the year 1912 until his resignation
pril 19, 1935.
his ability as an organizer and fire fighter was recog-
nized by the International :association of fire fighters. By that
association he was called to serve first as a member, then as Chair-
man of the Board of Directors, later as 2nd Vice-President, then
1st Vice-President, and finally as President.
As a man Chief hywnter possessed sterling qualities. He
was noted for his courage and thorough efficiency. Chile a strict
disciplinarian, he had a warm heart. the people of salt Lake had
the utmost confidence in the fire fighting ability of the depart-
