WHEREAS, Bernice Cook is one of those valuable but rare community and civic
workers that every City needs; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Cook spends most of her waking hours assisting one or another rr
neighborhood organization when not performing vital duties at home; and
WHEREAS, chief among her citizen roles is that of chairperson of the Peoples
Freeway Community Council, where she is a spokesman who calls the attention of the
City to a myriad of problems faced by a depressed area near the transportation center • .1
of the City; and
WHEREAS, Bernice's chairmanship of her community council requires her
participation at least monthly in the council sessions of the Salt Lake Association
of Community Councils, an organization initiated during the administration of Mayor
Conrad Harrison; and e,
WHEREAS, as if spending several evenings and afternoons per month was not 'I
enough, Bernice finds time to belong to the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and the
Utah Historical Society, which through her assistance and that of others has found a .a
new home in the Denver and Rio Grande Railway Station; and a
WHEREAS, Mrs. Cook is an avid participant in the exciting development of the z'
southern Gateway District surrounding Pioneer Park, which is also a part of her
community; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Cook serves as a hostess for the Utah Legislature at the State
Capital when they are in session and is a very active member of the Republican Party;
and
WHEREAS, Bernice is in the thick of activities promoting housing for the City
and her community, and during lengthy hearings preceding the allocation of monies
from the Community Development Block Grant funds, Mrs. Cook was always present to
advocate the needs of the underprivileged, the elderly, the young, and minority
citizens; and
WHEREAS, Mrs.. Cook attends most of the Tuesday evening City Council Meetings,
where she exhibits insight and understanding of the complex issues confronting Salt
Lake City; and
WHEREAS, during the recent difficult hearings preceding the decision to
increase rates for water and sewer assessments in Salt Lake City, Mrs. Cook stood
before the City's legislative branch and said, "I count myself among the poor and the
elderly of this City. I can't affort the increased rates nor can the homeowners that
live around me, but I support these increases as being needed to support the growth
of this City,"
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and City Council of Salt Lake City,
that they do hereby express on their behalf and on behalf of the residents of Salt
Lake City their sincere appreciation and gratitude for the valuable and dedicated
services Bernice Cook has rendered to this community. kl
