HomeMy WebLinkAbout067 of 2011 - honoring Beverly Taylor Sorenson R 11-1 Resolution 67 of 2011 Honoring Beverley Taylor Sorenson WHEREAS,Beverley Taylor Sorenson's childhood and family life was influenced by literature,music and dance;and WHEREAS,in 1995,Mrs. Sorenson visited Lincoln Elementary School in Salt Lake City and witnessed how children's lives were dramatically enriched from a high quality arts program;and WHEREAS,Mrs.Sorenson's concern about the lack of arts education in Utah Schools,particularly elementary schools,motivated her to dedicate her time and resources developing Art Works for Kids which has helped educate more than 100,000 children statewide,and WHEREAS,Mrs.Sorenson's strong advocacy in encouraging legislators to return art to elementary classrooms allowed her to witness a major milestone whereby,in 2008,the legislature passed the Beverley Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning Program which today supports arts education in more than 50 elementary schools in Utah:and WHEREAS,Mrs. Sorenson possesses the gift to bring together arts and education entities throughout Utah and to foster strong relationships amongst four of the State's top universities—the University of Utah,Southern Utah University, Utah State University and Brigham Young University,and WHEREAS,students of the University of Utah will reap the benefits of the Beverley Taylor Sorenson Arts and Education Complex on the University of Utah campus,a place for research which will facilitate teaching methods for integrating arts education into traditional core curriculum subjects such as math,science,history and language arts, and WHEREAS,the Sorenson family's generosity helped create the Sorenson Multi- Cultural and Unity Fitness Center in Salt Lake City's Glendale neighborhood,where the Starlite Dance Academy offers dance classes for children,providing an opportunity to participate in the arts;and WHEREAS,Mrs.Sorenson's commitment to both arts and education and her humanitarian nature is demonstrated in her work to bring joyful learning through the arts to every elementary school child in Utah, including Salt Lake City school children. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Salt Lake City Mayor and the Salt Lake City Council recognize and genuinely thank Beverley Taylor Sorenson for her tireless dedication and years of service to the arts education of students in Utah schools. Her commitment and contributions will continue to influence the lives of Salt Lake City children,our future leaders.
