JOINTRESOLUTIONRECOGNIZINGMARCH31, 2024, AS INTERNATIONAL
TRANSGENDERDAYOFVISIBILITYINSALT LAKE CITY
WHEREAS, InternationalTransgenderDayofVisibilityisan annual event celebrated on
March31, servingasamomenttohonorandrecognize the diverse
experiencesoftransgender, nonbinary, andgender nonconforming
individualsglobally; and
WHEREAS, SaltLakeCityreaffirmsitsunwaveringcommitment to championing the
rights, dignity, andequalityoftransgenderandgender -diverse individuals
acrossallcommunities; and
WHEREAS, transgender, nonbinary, andgendernonconforming individuals have
significantlycontributedtotheculturalfabricofSalt Lake City and Utah,
enrichingoursocietythroughtheiractivism, advocacy, and authentic self-
expression; and
WHEREAS, therepresentationoftransgender, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming
individualsinvariousformsofmediahasincreased, shedding light on
diverseidentitiesandhighlightingsubstantialcontributions to arts, science,
education, entertainment, andvariousfields; and
WHEREAS, amidstrecentlegislativeeffortsacrossthenation and Utah, targeting
transgenderyouth, andtheheartbreakinglossof individuals such as Nex
Benedict, itisimperativethatSaltLakeCitystand in solidarity with the
transgendercommunityandactivelypromoteinclusion, acceptance, and
celebration; and
WHEREAS, inlightofrecentlegislationaimedtotargetandexclude transgender youth,
whichposesseverethreatstotherightsandsafety of transgender and
gender -diverseindividuals, particularlyimpacting public accommodations
andincreasingrisksforthoseincarcerated, affecting all transgender
individualsinUtah, irrespectiveofage, educational attainment, criminal
justiceinvolvement, orsocioeconomicstatus. Itis crucial that we as a City
cometogethertocelebrateourtransgendercommunity; and
WHEREAS, InternationalTransgenderDayofVisibilityprovides an opportunity for
communitiesworldwidetoacknowledgeandhonor the accomplishments,
resilience, andleadershipoftransgenderindividuals.; and
WHEREAS, transgenderindividualsfacesignificantbarriers related to social
determinantsofhealth, leadingtoeconomicinequity, mental health
challenges, andlimitedhealthcareaccess. Research by the NIH highlights
thatstigma, discrimination, andsocietalexclusion are pivotal in causing
adversehealthoutcomes, includingcardiovascular diseases, mental health
issues, andreducedlifeexpectancy, callingforcomprehensive strategies to
enhancetheirhealthandeconomicconditions; and
WHEREAS, transgenderindividuals, especiallythosefromBIPOC communities,
encountercompoundeddiscriminationandnotable economic disparities,
necessitatingconcertedeffortstoachievegenuine inclusion and equity.
NOW, THEREFORE, BEITRESOLVED
thattheSaltLakeCityCouncilandMayorofSalt Lake City officially
designatesMarch31, 2024, asInternationalTransgender Day of Visibility
inSaltLakeCity, recognizingtheimportanceofthis day in fostering
understanding, respect, andinclusivity.

BEITFURTHERRESOLVED
thatSaltLakeCitycommitstopolicyinitiativesaimed at eliminating the
genderminoritypaygap, counteringdiscrimination, and safeguarding the
rightsandsafetyoftransgender, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming
individuals, withspecialattentiontopublicaccommodations and justice
systeminvolvement.
BEITFURTHERRESOLVED
thatSaltLakeCityencouragesparticipationfrom all community members,
especiallythosefromunderrepresentedgroups, in the International
TransgenderDayofVisibility. Thisfostersanenvironment of inclusivity,
raisesawarenessaboutthechallengesfacedbytransgender individuals,
andbolsterscollectiveeffortsagainstdiscrimination.
