RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING
<< PINE 10,2011,AS "CARES ENOUGH TO WEAR PINK"DAY
I WHEREAS, cancer affects millions of people all over the world. In the United States
approximately 1.5 million individuals were diagnosed with cancer in 2010,
affecting all races,ages and genders;and

WHEREAS, cancer is one of the deadliest diseases that has no guaranteed cure and impacts the lives4,
of people in our community;and
WHEREAS, in Utah,there are 407 incidences of cancer per 100,000 people. One hundred
forty-four of those 407 will die due to complications from cancer. Inversely,263 of the s

407 will be able to overcome cancer;and
WHEREAS, the cancer rate for women has steadily been on the rise since 1973. �Y
The survival rate of cancer patients has increased in Utah since 1973,and has
increased significantly since 1998 due to improvements in breast cancer treatment and ?`
early detection;and

WHEREAS, screening and preventative measures are some of the most effective ways to
combat cancer,enabling early diagnoses of the disease before it becomes
:y unmanageable; and
�J3; WHEREAS, according to 2005 data,breast cancer is 98.3%survivable if discovered early s,
FLA ' and significantly less so in later stages,highlighting the importance of -
? screening and mammograms;and p W'
5: WHEREAS, members of"Guardians of the Pink Heals Tour"dress in pink fire suits and drive pink'
r ` , fire trucks in honor of women,with the goal to remind the community of the struggles Mr`

of cancer and to assist local cancer organizations in their efforts to raise funds;and
WHEREAS, pink is a symbol of hope and love for women who desperately need support,
T�1 this campaign is also meant to support men and children who have suffered from cancer;

WHEREAS, the Pink Heals Tour has raised thousands of dollars for cancer research and
organizations that help cancer patients,and has promoted cancer awareness in each city
the Tour has visited;and
7 WHEREAS, the Pink Heals Tour is scheduled to tour Utah from June 9-12,2011,and will Zd :
T stop in Salt Lake City on June 10,2011,to help raise money for local charities
1 1 that helpwomen,men and children in their fight against cancer;and

WHEREAS, the Salt Lake City Fire and Police Departments will join the

The Salt Lake City Mayor and the Salt Lake City Council encourage our
community to join our fire fighters and police officers to wear pink as a symbol
of hope,courage and love in support of those battling cancer and to join the
