003 of 2011 - pertaining to the Salt Lake City Public Library Board of Directors and the management of the City Li R 11-1 , Resolution 3 of 2011 �, (,d ' RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT of the SALT LAKE CITY LIBRARY j) BOARD and LIBRARIAN 4 WHEREAS, Utah law authorizes cities to establish public libraries for the benefit of a J� municipality's residents,businesses,and other members of the public;and WHEREAS, Salt Lake City has a long tradition of building and maintaining libraries for the benefit of its residents,and i' WHEREAS, the Mayor, through the appointment of the Salt Lake City Public Library ;>>� Board of Directors with the advice and consent of the City Council,and the Cit1j Council, through state law and the establishment of the Librarlj >f Fund in the City budget,have an obligation to make sure the City's public {, libraries are operated for the benefit of the public;and WHEREAS,b City ordinance the Libra Board is responsible or the operation and y J �j p f p care of Salt Lake City's libraries and branches and is required to appoint a 1 competent person as the Librarian to have immediate charge of the 9 libraries within Salt Lake City;and WHEREAS,by City ordinance the Librarian is given the authority to act as the executive officer of the Library Board and to recommend the appointment of other personnel as needed to operate and maintain the City's libraries; i and r WHEREAS, the Library Board in March 2008 appointed Beth Elder as the Librarian .� after a long,arduous and public evaluation of applicants'qualifications to have charge of Salt Lake City's libraries;and f' ,. WHEREAS,the Library Board in 2009 adopted a three-year strategic plan to move an Z t already sterling library system forward to better serve Salt Lake City's residents and public,and WHEREAS, the Librarian has been diligent in working with the Library Board toward ; -` " that goal;and s'" �? StS ! ) t Al NOW, THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED The Salt Lake City Council and Mayor Ralph Becker affirm their mutual ` confidence in the Library Board,the adopted three-year strategic plan,and i f the Librarian's efforts to implement the strategic plan. The City Council and Mayor acknowledge the immense responsibility the Library Board-all volunteer citizens-has undertaken to provide direction and guidance to the Librarian in the operation of one of Salt Lake Citij's most prominent and respected public benefits. The City Council and Mayor also recognize that the Public Library S System's employees are essential to the high level of service we aim to provide Salt Lake City residents.
