07/12/2016 - Work Session - Announcements A.13 City Council Announcement July 12, 2016 For your information: 8:50:11 PM Renewable Energy and Carbon Emission Reduction Goals Council Members: Following the Council's vote on the Carbon resolution tonight, staff will be ready to take a quick group photo. Chair will ask for Council Members and the Mayor to come in front of the Dais,the Chair and Mayor will sign the resolution and then staff will take the photo. Information Needed by Council Staff: Economic Development Priority: Potential straw polls 1. Is the Council okay with sending the 2016 Policy Statement and a list of economic development ideas generated in public discussions to the Administration?Yes a. The Council's 2o16 Economic Development Policy Statement(Attachment 1)to be formally adopted by the Council at a future meeting. b. The Council's list of economic development ideas generated through public discussions (Attachment 2)would be transmitted as an attachment to a Council letter to the Administration. 2. Would Council Members like to schedule one-on-one"tours"with Economic Development Director Lara Fritts to introduce her to their respective Districts?Yes Three Council Members have requested such meetings. Timing:September.Purpose:Acquaint Lara with economic development potential and challenges in each District. Cindy Gust-Jenson, Executive Council Director, said suggestions under Item 3 were raised by Council Members to further the Economic Development discussion. She said Staff could get basic feedback from the Council tonight or a more detailed discussion could be scheduled at a future meeting. Councilmember Rogers asked if Council Members were comfortable with taking the suggestions home to review and then holding a discussion next Tuesday. All Council Members were in favor, except Councilmember Charlie Luke who was absent from the meeting. 3. Which follow-up discussion options would the Council like to pursue? This menu was developed from Council Member ideas during one-on-one meetings with staff on June 21,22 and 23. a. Hold an off-site Council meeting at the Fairpark.Invite residents and businesses to comment on economic development needs for the West Side and Central City,including their vision and preferences for economic development. b. Hold an off-site Council meeting with a fact-finding format to feature ideas for higher education institutions to work more closely with Salt Lake City on economic development opportunities and projects.Include discussion of new technology campus("Research Park II");new business incubators and spin-offs;potential opportunities for students to move from internships to permanent employment,etc. c. Hold an off-site Council meeting designed to elicit feedback from businesses around the City,including their vision and preferences for the City's economic development. d. Organize a round-table discussion in a retreat setting for small businesses to communicate their particular needs to the Council and Administration. e.
