Chairman Rex Kennedy presided. PRESENT Board Members Staff Ed Engh Sheryl Gillilan John Green Patti Hansen Rex Kennedy Susan Norris Laura Lockhart Grenville Roles Scott Mietchen Mark Stackhouse Barbara Stubblefield Excused Jeanne LeBer Clayton White Rex Kennedy convened the meeting. (Note: it was at first believed that a quorum was not present, however after determining over 50% were in attendance, it was agreed a quorum was present.) Laura noted that Wednesdays seem to be the best day for the board to convene, and asked board members to make a special effort to attend quarterly meetings. The next three board meeting dates were set for: July 14, August 25 and September 22 (quarterly meeting). Location to be announced. ACCEPTANCE OF MINUTES Barbara moved that the April 20, 1993 minutes be accepted. Laura seconded, the motion carried. ADMINISTRATOR'S REPORT Patti Hansen said that the budget year ends June 30 and that she will give a report on it at the next board meeting. The budget for the coming year was adopted on June 8. She reported that a crew is working on irrigation at the pond area, and that pavers will be placed in the amphitheater this Fall. She said city architects are working on remodeling the offices and gift shop and a bid will go out for the construction. She said the parrot cages can be included with this project. Grenville showed a plan the architects have drawn up. Patti turned the time over to Sheryl, since she has met several times with Patti, John, Scott, Laura, Grenville and Mark regarding hiring an executive director for the Friends. Tracy Aviary Advisory Board Minutes June 21, 1993 - Page Two Sheryl said that in order to do this, the Friends of Tracy Aviary needs to be restructured, the board dissolved and a new board created and some by-laws written . The newly constituted board will be responsible for getting the executive director hired as soon as possible . John Green has been working on a job description . The executive director will be hired by the Friends of Tracy Aviary and the City. Salt Lake City will contract with the Friends and contribute up to $25, 000 to hire this person . CURATOR' S REPORT Grenville distributed copies of the Acquisitions, Sales and Death report (Exhibit A) . He reported that two helmeted Currassows were received on loan; he noted that these birds are endangered, cosmetically perfect and a worthwhile addition to the Aviary. Two Razor-billed Currassows are out on loan to a specialist, of which half the progeny will come back to the Aviary. Sales of various birds amounted to $650 . 00. Grenville said he had not received a written report from the vet on deaths . He explained that he gets more than a verbal back if a disease is present, and the paperwork normally follows up before each board meeting. The Golden eagle death was a tragedy . The bird bounced off the trainer 's hand and flew into the park where it was harassed by children, flew into a fence post and died . However they are actively shopping for a Bald eagle as Clayton had suggested . Referring to the egg list, Grenville said about 56 species have produced . The babies from the Demoiselle cranes, golden eagles, and Vasa parrots are all also doing very well . Grenville believes Tracy Aviary is still the only zoo in North America successfully raising Vasa parrots . A regular visit from the AAZPA is not due until 1995 . Grenville said two zoo directors have confirmed they will come for an inspection visit, and the third had not yet responded . Grenville said the visit would hopefully take place within a month. John and Barbara feel it is important that a representative from the Parks Department be present during the visit . John said it is crucial that the case statement these people are responding to be simple and crystal clear . Tracy Aviary Advisory Board Minutes June 21, 1993 - Page Three Scott moved that no one from the Advisory Board will meet with them unless they ask to meet with us . Restating the motion he said that the people who are coming in look at the written record . meet with the City administration , meet with the Aviary people and that they don 't meet with Board members unless they (AAZPA) want to : we can 't go out and volunteer . Barbara seconded , the motion passed . COMMITTEE REPORTS Garden - Barbara reported that work on irrigation has started along the pond; and the two landscape architects have agreed to render a new plan for the next phase of landscaping . Public Relations - Laura said that sign production is far behind schedule and that she and Mark will meet with the manu- facturer . Laura will review the contract . She said they are planning on putting together a visitor 's survey to better target advertising money as well as advertisers . They would like to recruit some people for a lobbying task force concerning the state budget for funding of education programs . Scott said that Hayden Barlow is the chairman . Scott suggested going to the legislature for funding as a consortia with the Planetarium, Children 's Museum, Arboretum, Natural History Museum, and Zoo . Laura asked Patti if it is possible to get better signage to the Aviary . Fund Raising - John brought up a kiosk idea of advertising and displaying merchandise in the malls . He can type it up; he said it is risky and expensive, and should only be done if money can be made off it . The bidding process and negotia- tion has to take place before Christmas . Patti said that the Utah Center can carry Aviary merchandise . Propagation - Rex said the Propagation committee has not met . He said his only concern is that the Hyacinth macaws are expensive birds and are not producing offspring . He said they need to look at replacing the male, which will be expensive ($10, 000) , unless they can work out a trade . Rex said babies go for about $6, 500 each.
