Board members toured the Fairmont Aquatics Center. The pool will open to the public
between Christmas and New Year's. Salt Lake County will hold a Grand Opening
Ceremony in January. Fairmont will pick up a lot of the Steiner East swimmers when the
Salt Lake City Sports Complex is turned over to SLOC on January 15, 2002.
Jeffrey Morrow made a motion to approve the October Board meeting minutes as written.
Meryl Redisch seconded the motion. The motion passed.
Salt Lake City Recreation Program Advisory Board Ordinance
Rick Graham updated the Board on the progress of the revised ordinance. Mayor
Anderson supports the changes to the ordinance. The ordinance is at the City Attorney's
office and, on approval, it will be sent to the City Council. Rick expects the City Council
to get the ordinance sometime around the middle of December. Rick will let the Board
members know when it is put on the Council agenda.
New Board members will need to be appointed after the changes in the ordinance are
official. New Salt Lake City district boundaries should be set soon. Three members who
will represent recreation centers also need to be appointed. (Steiner/Fairmont, Central
City/Kiwanis, and Northwest/Sorenson Center.)
Coordination between the City/County/School District
David Spatafore recently met with Kathy Black, Patrick Garcia, and two Community
Education representatives. As an important 1st step, Community Education will mail out
a brochure in December that will go to 80,000 homes in Salt Lake City. Included in the
brochure are programs and/or contact phone numbers from the Sorenson Multi-Cultural
Center, Mayor's Youth Programs, Salt Lake County, and local youth sports
organizations. The next step is to establish a database from which people can get

information about programs in their specific areas. David reported that it might be
possible to qualify for Tier 2 ZAP tax funding to cover the cost of future publications.
Salt Lake County Report
Debbie Butler was ill and will report next meeting.
Transportation Route
Kate Deiss was unable to make the meeting, so she will report next meeting.
Other Business
Rick reported that thanks to Tree Utah and Meryl Redisch, some 4-14 ft. trees would be
planted in Fairmont Park after the Olympics to replace trees that were lost due to
construction of the Aquatics Center.
Janet Wolf announced that Global Artways is now housed in a building next to the
Fairmont Aquatics Center. Janet hopes to expand the Mayor's Youth Programs to other
park sites in Salt Lake City.
Rick Graham reported that a 1/2 million-dollar request has been submitted to the City
Council for construction of a skate park on the site of the old Fairmont Pool. The Jordan
Park skate park is about 40% complete. He anticipates a March completion date for the
Jordan Park skate park. Rick recently met with Jim Jensen, Executive Director of the
Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Salt Lake, to discuss ways to mitigate future parking
problems at Fairmont Park. In their discussion, Jim Jensen mentioned that the Boys and
Girls Club organization owns 4 acres of land around Meadowlark Elementary. The Boys
and Girls Club may be interested in partnering with Salt Lake City to donate the land for
the construction of a future skate park.
Jeffrey Morrow noted that the Rotary Clubs of Salt Lake City have donated apparatus for
the construction of a playground for disabled patrons at Liberty Park.
David announced that in August 2002, Herman Frank Park would host the W.B.B.A.
World Series. Rulon Gardner is scheduled to throw out the first pitch.
The next meeting is scheduled for Friday,January 4,2002 at 3:30 p.m. in Room 138
of the City/County Building. David Spatafore asked Rick Graham to send Board
Members a packet containing the new Recreation Program Advisory Board Ordinance so
they can look at it before the January 4 meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 4:40 p.m.
