Script for 1998 Induction Ceremony
Deeda Open meeting: "Good afternoon. I would like to call this City Council
meeting to order. We will begin with the presentation of colors and the
pledge of allegiance by Girl Scout Troop #1012 and Scout Leader Nancy
Cowie."
Scouts Flag Ceremony/Pledge of Allegiance: Scouts enter Council Chamber from
hallway. Some scouts enter the Chamber from the north double doors
carrying the U.S. flag;others enter through the south double doors carrying
the Utah flag. Both groups walk down the aisles, stop in front of the large
floor lamps and turn to face the audience. One scout goes to the microphone
and asks the audience to rise and join her in the pledge of allegiance.
Following the pledge, audience is seated. The scouts carrying flags walk in
front of the dais; the U.S. flag is placed in the flag holder at the south end, the
Utah flag is placed in the flag holder on the north end. Scouts exit Chamber.
After everyone is seated . . .
Deeda Welcome: "On behalf of Mayor Corradini and my fellow Council Members, I
would like to welcome all of you to this Oath of Office ceremony. We extend
a special welcome to the family members and guests of the Council Members
and Council Members Elect. In looking at the audience, I recognize many
elected officials and community leaders and welcome you to this ceremony.
The first order of business today will be a presentation by Mayor Corradini to
Council Members who are leaving office. (Turns to Mayor.) Mayor
Corradini.
Mayor Mayor walks to podium and presents silver platters to Council Members
leaving office. This is done one-at-a-time, in order of Council district. After
Council Member receives gift, he/she returns to dais.
Mayor and last outgoing Council Member return to their chairs . . .
Deeda Invite Council Members leaving office to make remarks: "On behalf of the
Council, I would to express our sincere appreciate to Council Member
Martinez, Council Member Mark and Council Member Godfrey. They all
have our respect, admiration and gratitude for the many contributions they
have made to Salt Lake City. It has been my privilege and honor to work
with each of you. Your commitment and dedication are obvious. I believe
our City is a better place because of your efforts. I now invite each of you to
offer your remarks,beginning with Council Member Martinez] from Council
District One."
The Council Members leaving office deliver remarks from chair on the dais. After Lee delivers
his remarks . . .
Deeda "Thank you, Lee. Next will be Council Member Mark from Council District
Three."
Mary delivers her remarks ...
Deeda "Thank you, Mary. Next will be Council Member Godfrey from Council
District Five."
After Tom has repeated his remarks ...
Deeda Oath of office: "We will now proceed to the oath of office ceremony for
incoming Council Members. As I read your name, please come forward to
the podium and receive the oath of office. After receiving the oath, I invite
you to give some remarks and then take your chair on the dais. We will
begin with Carlton Christensen representing Council District One. The oath
of office for Carlton Christen will be administered Judge Quinn. Carlton and
Judge Quinn; if you could please step to the podium."
The incoming Council Member walks to the podium, stands on the south side facing north.
The judge stands on the north side. The judge will deliver the oath of office and then be seated.
The incoming Council Member will address the audience and walk to the dais. The Council
Member leaving office stands and they shake hands. The outgoing Council Member leaves the
dais and takes his/her assigned seat in the audience. The incoming Council Member sits at the
dais.
Deeda "Thank you Council Member Christensen and welcome. Next to receive the
oath of office will be Tom Rogan representing Council District Three. The
oath of office for Mr. Rogan will be administered by Judge Uno. Tom and
Judge Uno; if you will please step to the podium."
This process is repeated until all incoming Council Members have delivered their remarks and
are seated on the dais. Judge Kimball will swear in Roger Thompson; Ken Cowley will swear in
Keith Christensen.
Deeda Closing remarks: "On behalf of the City Council, I would like again express
our sincere thanks and appreciation to Lee Martinez, Mary Mark and Tom
Godfrey for their selfless contribution to Salt Lake City. I want all of you to
know that your influence and leadership will be missed. I am glad to have
had an opportunity to serve with you. Also on behalf of the City Council, I
would like to welcome the new Council Members. We look forward to
working with you. This concludes the Oath of Office Ceremony. My thanks
to all of you for attending this ceremony. I would like to invite everyone to
attend the reception immediately following this meeting. This meeting is
now adjourned."

Office Ceremony on Monday, January 5, 1998, at 12 : 00 p.m. in Room 315,
City Council Office, City County Building, 451 South State .
