Item #1 : Introduction of Esther Truitt
Introductions were exchanged between the current Board
members and Esther Truitt who is joining the Salt Lake City
Urban Forestry Board as the new representative for the
Central Business District ( CBD ) .
Item #2 : Minutes for September 1987
MOTION : Kathie Anderson
To accept the minutes as written .

Vote : Aye : unanimous
Item #3 : 1987 Annual Report
The Board made a few changes in the 1987 Annual Report .
Jennifer Harrington will have a draft of the revisions ready
to be typed for final copy . Lloyd Siegendorf will provide a
cover sheet for the report . After approval by the Director
of Parks and Recreation , 20 copies of the final report will
be sent to the Mayor and his staff and the City Council and
their staff for review. The Report will be presented on
November 12th in the Council Chambers . Lloyd recommended
the Board Chairperson , Jennifer Harrington , and the Salt
Lake City Urban Forester , Steve Schwab , each take about five
minutes for an introduction and presentation .
Item #4 : Susan Hagen , 1821 East Redondo Avenue
The Board reviewed the issue of the tree on the parking strip
in front of Susan Hagen ' s residence at 1821 E . Redondo Ave . .
Susan was not in attendance with any further information on

efforts to save the tree from being removed . Final recom-
mendation was made by Steve Schwab , Salt Lake City Urban
Forester , to have the tree removed because of the impending
hazards and liability . The Board voted unanimously to
support the recommendation . Susan will be notified of the
decision and she will be given some options for a replace-
ment tree to be planted on the parking strip .

Item #5 : Public Hearing for Urban Forestry Ordinance
Jennifer called the meeting to order . Steve Schwab gave a
slide presentation showing some of the problems that will
hopefully be prevented when the Ordinance is adopted . The
comments from the public and tree care professionals
attending the meeting were mostly supportive of the
intention of the ordinance . There were a few concerns
brought up . General agreement was that communication and
education , among the professionals , the public , and the
utility companies , would bring acceptable results for the
benefit of the Salt Lake City urban forest and those who
are affected by it .
Item #6 : Announcements
A. Steve Schwab had a number of announcements :
1 . The November/December issue of the American
Forestry Forum, put out by the American Forestry
Association , will feature a cover story on
" Newspaper for Trees " .
2 . Tree planting requests
The budget allows for the purchase of approxi -
mately 400 trees per year . As of October 1 , 1987
the Parks Department Urban Forestry Division
started taking planting requests for 1989 .
3 . The tree removal / stump removal contract for
approximately 65 trees , awarded to ASPLUNDH , is
almost completed . A second contract for
approximately 150 removals , awarded to Diamond
Tree Service , will begin October 27 .
4. A tree trimming contract is going out to bid and
is scheduled to begin the end of November , 1987 .
The contract will begin with 545 trees and allow
for add-ons up to 900 to 1000 trees total .
5 . Utah State Forestry awarded a $3 , 000 grant to the
Salt Lake City Urban Forestry division to help
complete the tree inventory work started in 1986 .
