There were a number of concerns brought out in regards to some of the trees tentatively scheduled for removal. There was also much concern for the Norway Maples at the west entrance being in danger of damage or destruction by the construction crews. During the three years of reconstruction, there is question as to how the trees are going to be watered and cared for properly. At 7: 00 p.m. the meeting reconvened in room 414 to see the presentation by Jan Striefel of Land Design. The pictures showed the original layout of the grounds and walkways used as a basis for the reconstruction plans. Appreciation was expressed to Jan Striefel and Burtch Beall for attending the Board Meeting and answering questions about the plans for Washington Square. Kathie Anderson and JoAnne Milner were excused to attend another meeting commitment. The remainder of the Board Members and citizens in attendance discussed concerns and issues to be considered for input at the point of 70% review. Issues to be considered: • 1. Tree preservation: Healthy trees, unique trees,' and Heritage trees. 2. Tree health and safety. 3 . The rose garden 4 . Pruning and maintenance: DED, management, long term maintenance funding, etc. 5. Economic analysis on removal and replacement. 6 . Parking lot/areas. 7. Bob Burke, Jennifer Harrington, and anyone else interested, will review the 40% plans to study the proposed design and give a short presentation to the Board at the next meeting. The pruning contract should be started as soon as possible for the benefit of the trees and their visual affect at the time the project is completed. There is still great concern about finding people to do the tree pruning properly. There needs to be some way to qualify prospective contractors to insure a proper job. The August 5th meeting will be strictly devoted to the City & County Building/Washington Square Project. Meeting adjourned at 8: 55 p.m. 1g'
