MINUTES
SALT LAKE CITY URBAN FORESTRY BOARD
RETREAT MEETING - AUGUST 4, 1987

Item #1 : Jennifer expressed a feeling of frustration with the
length of process for items such as the Ordinance, getting
new Board members appointed , etc. . The other Board members
are also feeling the same frustration.
Item #2 : A brainstorming session made list of 25 items as goals
and objectives the Board would like to see worked on. They
were broken down to 4 basic priorities:
1 . Get projects moving through the process faster.
2 . Public Relations
- Media
- Special Projects. . .
3 . Community Involvement
- Planting
- Pruning. . .
4 . Better Communications
- City Departments
- Community Affairs
- Survey in Water Bills
- Council & Mayor
UDOT
UP&L. . .
Item #3 : The Board needs to set up specific committees and be
constantly open to ideas that will promote the goals and
objectives of the Board .
1. Ordinance
2 . Education
3 . Public Relations
4 . Community Liaizon
Selection and assignments will be made when the new Board
members are appointed and are able to attend the meeting.

Subcommittee reports will be written and given to Jennifer
so she can put together a draft by the September 1, 1987

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
1 . Get projects moving through the system - stop bottlenecks.
2 . More involvement by individual Board members.
3 . Better inform the public of the Urban Forestry Board .

4 . Provide timely services - get away from crisis management.
5 . Voice local neighborhood concerns and issues.
6 . Get beyond status quo - begin a planting program.
7 . More community involvement with Board projects.
8 . Newspaper for Trees - $ projects.
9 . Friends of the Urban Forest.
10 . Fundraiser in addition to Newspaper for Trees.
11 . Better communication with Community Council .
12 . Urban Forestry Ordinance to reflect community desires.
13 . Continued involvement with community design issues and
programs.
14 . Promote proper pruning of trees.
15 . Promote proper construction practices around trees.
16 . Develop better communications between City departments .
