Call to Order/Welcome
Ms.Felicia Baca,Director of the Salt Lake City Arts Council called the Art Design Board Meeting to
order. She explained this is a co-meeting of the two Arts Council boards for the purpose of cross-
disciplinary work/introductions.
II. Approval of February 3,2022 Minutes
Ms. Tiffini Porter moved to approve the February 2022 minutes for the Art Design Board.Ms. Colour
Maisch seconded that motion. The Art Design Board Minutes were approved unanimously.
III. Presentation of Fleet Block Development Update
Ms.Ashley Cleveland presented about the art healing project related to the Fleet Block Murals. The Arts
Council staff and others have been meeting regularly with the families of the individuals depicted in the
Fleet Block Murals, located at 800 S 300 W. The meetings had two goals: 1)to provide grief support for
the surviving family members of the individuals who are depicted in the murals and;2)to engage the
families in a discussion for a longer standing memorial or arts space that would continue the conversation
about social justice and honor their family members is a way that they feel will be fitting. The existing
building where the murals are located has been determined to be unsafe and hazardous and will be torn
down at some point in the future. The Planning Department and Community and Neighborhoods
This document constitutes the official minutes from the Salt Lake Art Design Board's March 16,2022 convening.
Department are working to find a developer that will bring economic development to that neighborhood
that meshes well with the current neighborhood and addresses the issues around equity and inclusion that
the place has nurtured.
The final meeting with the families will culminate in a statement drafted with input from the families that
will be placed on signage at Fleet Block for the next year and a half. The message will contain information
about the work the families have been doing over the past six months and the art healing process.Placing
signage at the location will allow the message to reach the individuals who are stewarding the libraries
there and providing services and support to the neighbors experiencing homelessness and allow them to
provide feedback and ask questions about the process. In addition, the families will be drafting a letter to
the Mayor's Office on what they would not like to see regarding the family memorial and maybe some
suggestions on what they would like to see.
The process has been slow and purposeful in working to maintain trust between the families and the city.
