RE: Housing SLC Conversation
REQUESTED ACTION: Discussion only. Please come prepared to weigh in on questions
related to housing.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY/ANALYSIS: Salt Lake City's (the "City") Department of
Community and Neighborhoods (CAN) is in the process of updating its five-year housing plan,
which it is calling Housing SLC. The City is currently seeking to hear from various stakeholders to
receive input and feedback in order to create a housing plan that addresses the concerns of those
stakeholders. Focus groups, such as this one, are one way that CAN is connecting with
stakeholders to receive input.
The nexus between housing, commerce, and economic development is an important piece
of a broader housing plan. While commercial and residential are separate categories that are often
treated separately, the two interact in important ways that need to be understood in order to create
a better housing and business system. CAN is interested in learning more about how the current
housing crisis is impacting the business community and how the business community and the City
can work together to create a better housing system that will more fully meet the needs of our
current and future residents.
While staff working on Housing SLC will help facilitate the discussion, we hope that the Board
will guide the conversation. Please note that all responses are voluntary and will remain
confidential. No identifying information will be used in any final reports. The conversation will be
analyzed for larger themes, which will help inform the City's new housing plan, including goals,
strategies for action, and other considerations.
ATTACHMENTS: Potential questions for discussion.
1. How does a lack of affordable housing impact your business?
2. Are your employees able to find housing in SLC? If not, what challenges does that pose for
your business?
3. What should the City do to address the housing crisis?
4. How do you think that the business community and the City can work together to address
the housing crisis?
5. What partnerships should the City form to address affordable housing challenges?
6. Is there anything that we should have asked that we didn't?
