Third Quarter - January, February, & March 2023
PUBLIC ART
Poplar Grove
• On Wednesday, January 25th, the Public Art Program made a presentation to the Poplar
Grove Community Council that covered new public art projects coming to the Poplar
Grove neighborhood (400 South Viaduct Trail and Poplar Grove Park sports court
mural). The commissioned artists from the Poplar Grove Park public art opportunity, the
Roots Art Kollective, and Public Lands staff joined during the meeting.
• On Friday, January 27th, the Public Art Program met with the Roots Art Kollective to
discuss progress and details related to their design and community engagement plans
for the Poplar Grove Park public art commission.
• On Thursday, February, 23,d, the Public Art Program met with the Roots Art Kollective to
discuss their nearly completed design proposal for the Poplar Grove Park public art
opportunity.
Public Way Concrete
• On February 8th, the Public Art Program met with representatives of the Engineering
division of the department of Public Services to discuss the Public Way Concrete Public
Art project that was selected for funding by the Art Design Board in December 2022.
• On February 9th, the Public Art Program met with representatives from the Engineering
Division to discuss the Concrete Program and a public art project implementation. The
Art Design Board selected this project for public art funding in December 2022.
Bike Racks
• Foothills Trailheads: Bike Rack Murals Request for Qualifications was released in March
— This public art opportunity accepted qualifications from artists (emerging and/or those
without previous public art experience are especially encouraged to apply).
• Deadline: Thursday, 3/23 by 5:00 pm
o Thursday, 3/9 at 6:00 pm —The Public Art Program will held a virtual information
session for prospective applicants of the Foothills Trailheads: Bike Rack Murals
public art opportunity via Webex.
• On Thursday March 9`h, the Public Art Program led a virtual information session and
Q&A for prospective applicants of the Foothills Trailheads: Bike Rack Murals project.
A recording of the info session has been posted on our website.
• The Foothills Trailheads: Bike Rack Murals Call for Artists closed on Thursday, March
23rd at 5:00pm. The public art program received a total of 62 submissions from Salt
Lake City regional artists; about 29% of artists identified themselves as first-time
applicants. The Art Design Board and stakeholders will be reviewing applications during
their April 5th meeting.
Out of the Blue
• Over the last year since installing Out of the Blue, we have had requests from the
Mayor's office/other artists to address copyright and merchandising of the Out of the
Blue sculpture. We have been unable to make progress on this item since early
November due to the high volume of work in the attorney's office. Over the quarter, we
had a first meeting with a contracted lawyer out of California who specializes in this type
of law.
Pre-Qualified Artist Pool
• The Public Art Program listed the selected 47 Pre-Qualified Pool artists and artist-led
teams on the Public Art website. A comprehensive booklet with details of each artist is in
the works was distributed to partners and commissioning. Link to the webpage is here:

Jordan River Boat Ramps
• On January 13th, public art program staff met with Ms. Suzanne Malloy, who teaches art
at Edison Elementary in the Poplar Grove Neighborhood, and the commissioned artist
Colette Hosmer to discuss the community engagement portion of the Jordan River Boat
Ramps multi-site public art commission.
• On Friday February 24th, the Public Art Program led a community engagement activity for
the Jordan River Boat Ramps public art project. Mayor Mendenhall spoke to Edison
Elementary 4th grade students regarding this public art project and walked with the
students back to Edison along the Jordan River. It is estimated that over 80 children
engaged in this activity.
• The Public Art Program oversaw the installation of Colette Hosmer's Jordan River
Current. A total of 25 8-foot steel trout sculptures were installed at four different sites on
the Jordan River: Riverview (1835 North Redwood Road; 11 sculptures), Gadsby (1223
West North Temple; 6 sculptures), Fisher Mansion (1206 West 200 South; 3 sculptures),
and Glendale Park (1700 South and approximately 1200 West; 5 sculptures). Installation
occurred throughout the last week in March.
400 South Viaduct Trail
• The 400 South Viaduct Trail public art opportunity closed on Thursday, January 19th. In
total, 72 artists and artist-led teams submitted qualifications for this project. The Art
Design Board reviewed these applications and discussed this project and selected four
finalists for a formal interview during its 2/1/23 meeting.
• Wednesday, March 1 st, from 12:00 —2:00 pm. The project's four finalists—Di Bari &
Associates, HaddadlDrugan, Sujin Lim, and Suikang Zhao—will meet at the project site
with project stakeholders, including representatives from SLC Engineering and
Transportation.
• The Public Art Program conducted reference checks for each of the four finalists being
considered for the 400 South Viaduct Trail public art opportunity. A transcript will be
provided to the Art Design Board and project stakeholders in the coming days.
City & County Building Art Collection
• On Monday, January 30th, the Public Art Program attended a citywide meeting organized
by the Engineering Division to discuss the repairs that will be done to the City & County
Building following the March 2020 earthquake.
Collections Management Software
• The Public Art Program met with representatives from Artwork Archive, the company
that was recently hired to implement a collection management software of our public art
collection. Data import began during this quarter and is expected to be completed by the
end of the calendar year.
Liberty Park Sports Courts
• On January 18th, Renato Olmedo-Gonzalez and Makaylah Respicio-Evans, public lands
planner, met with Kristina Robb, the East Liberty Park Community Organization Chair, to
discuss the Liberty Park Basketball court project.
• On Friday, January 20th, the Public Art Program, and representatives from Public Lands
met with Chatbooks, a Utah-based tech company that is interested in making an
investment in the Liberty Park basketball court project to dicuss a potential gift in support
of this project. However, Chatbooks opted to not support this project.
• On Thursday, March 16th, the Public Art Program attended the 70% Design Review
meeting for the Liberty Park Basketball Court.
• On Thursday, March 16th, Renato Olmedo-Gonzalez, Public Art Program Manager, met
with Alisa McCusker, Senior Curator for the Utah Museum of Fine Arts to discuss a
possible partnership for the Liberty Park Basketball Court public art project. In this project
structure, the UMFA will identify an artwork within their permanent collection that will be
adapted into a sports court mural for the park.
500 North
• On Thursday, February 23rd, Renato Olmedo-Gonzalez went before the Fairpark
Community Council to introduce the Public Art Program and its upcoming public at
project at 500 N and 1300 W/1200 W. Future community engagement for this project will
take place in the next quarter.
Life on State
• On January 12th, J.R. Hardman, an associate producer at PBS Utah, met with Renato
Olmedo-Gonzalez to discuss the Life on State public art project and the eight
commissioned artists. Ms. Hardman is currently producing an episode of Season 5 of the
show This is Utah that will air in the spring of 2024 and will highlight the art, histories, and
culture touched upon by this public art project.
Maintenance
• In early January, Metal Arts Foundry finished repairing and installing the damaged works
at International Peace Gardens in the Denmark, Vietnam, Wales, and England Gardens.
The pieces were not only repaired but reinforced to be more secure and deter theft.
• The Public Art Program performed condition checks on artworks in the vicinity of the
Delta Center. Several artworks near the Gateway were repaired by Metal Arts Foundry
and no work on-site will be carried out during the game.
• On Tuesday, January 31 st, the Public Art Program met with Mr. GJ LaBonty from Utah
Transit Authority. Ongoing stewardship and conservation needs of the artworks located
within Salt Lake City TRAX Stations were discussed.
• The Arts Council has sought guidance from the Finance Department on their
recommended approach and/or FY24 budget request related to public art maintenance
funds that are currently not addressed by allowable uses in the CIP budget, leaving
much of the city's art collection without maintenance funds.
Art Design Board
The Board convened for its monthly meetings In January, February, and March.
• Art Design Board Meeting on Wednesday, January 4th, 2023, from 5—7 pm.
o At this meeting, the Art Design Board selected 47 artists and artist-led teams
across a variety of mediums, disciplines, and experience levels for inclusion in
the 2023-2025 Pre-Qualified Artist Pool.
• Art Design Board executive committee meeting —Thursday, January 26th, 2023
(4 pm, virtual). Current board member Alex Moya was invited to attend.
• Art Design Board meeting—Wednesday, February 1 st, 2023, 5 - 7 pm (hybrid, at the
Art Barn and through Webex).
0 400 South Viaduct Trail public art opportunity: Selection of four finalists for a
formal interview with the Board and project stakeholders. The finalists—Laura
Haddad &Tom Drugan, DiBari &Associates, Sujin Lim, and Suikang Zhao.
0 2023-2025 Pre-Qualified Artist Pool: Brook Robertson, who is a re-applicant to
the Pool, was voted for inclusion. His application was missed during the Board's
discussion last month due to a technical oversight. The 2023-2025 Pool is
comprised of 48 artist and artist-led teams.
o The Art Design Board adopted their bylaws and selected Alex Moya as its Vice
Chair.
• On Wednesday, February 22nd, the Art Design Board Executive Committee met to
discuss next week's Art Design Board meeting. Alex Moya, who was elected as Vice
Chair last month, joined for the first time.
• Art Design Board Meeting: Wednesday, March 1, from 5— 7 pm. 400 South Viaduct
Trail Finalist Presentations (potential action / artist recommendation).
o On Wednesday March 1 st, from 5:00 —7:30 pm, the Art Design Board hosted in-
person interviews with the artist finalists for the 400 South Viaduct Trail public art
opportunity. Project stakeholders, including City representatives from
Transportation and Engineering, and community stakeholders were invited to
attend and participate.
Other Public Art News
• On December 21 st Felicia Baca met with Lisa Schaeffer and Kristen Riker to discuss the
inclusion of 1.5% in bonded projects. This was approved for public art. Since this
meeting, we have been working with all stakeholders involved to ensure bonded projects
are inclusive of public art.
• Public art program staff attended a webinar on Public Art and Sustainability, hosted
virtually by the Public Art Exchange, on January 18th.
• On February 15th, the Public Art Program led a training for the Park Rangers that
focused on providing context on the SLC Public Art Collection, in addition to providing
resources and useful tips.
TWILIGHT
• On March 22nd we will be announcing the Twilight Concert Series lineup publicly. Season
passes will go on sale on March 23td, following by individual tickets going on sale March
24th. More information can be found

• The Twilight Concert Series lineup has been announced, with season passes and tickets
on sale! We had record sales after our launch, with season passes selling out within the
first couple of hours. The series is dedicated to connecting audiences with the arts by
presenting artists that represent strong artistic values and diverse social principles. More

VISUAL ARTS
Finch Lane Gallery
• New installations were installed at Finch Lane Gallery the week of 1/9/2023, with an
opening for the public taking place on 1/13/23.

o Opening Reception is January 20th, 2023, 6-9pm, during Salt Lake Gallery Stroll.
o There was an excellent turnout of 100 attendees, many of whom were attending
from out of town.
o Both artists spoke to the crowd and answered questions about their work.
• 3/10/23—4/21/23: "Sister" curated by Maru Quevedo // Malachi Wilson
• Opening Reception was Friday, March 17th, 6-9pm, during Salt Lake Gallery Stroll.
• On February 2nd, exhibiting artist Steven Chodoriwsky conducted a teach-in/gallery visit
with UofU Design students.
• Finch Gallery hosted a gallery visit, hosted by artist Steven Chodoriwsky, and attended
by 20 University of Utah students.
• On 2/17 Finch Lane Gallery participated in Salt Lake Gallery Stroll between 6-9pm.
• Radical Joy curated by SISTER, and VACANCIES by Malachi Wilson, opened March 14
—and closed on April 21 st. There was an artist reception on Friday, March 17th, 6-9pm
LIVING TRADITIONS PROGRAMS
• The Performing Arts Coordinator hosted the second Living Traditions Festival Advisory
Committee Meeting on Tuesday January 10th. The Committee discussed production
and programming updates, looked at the updated festival layout, and had time for
feedback and suggestions. This is a volunteer committee that meets monthly.
• Interest forms were due Wednesday March 1 st at 11:59pm, and notification took place
on Friday March 24th. For more information about the festival

• The Performing Arts Program accepted interest forms to participate in the annual Living
Traditions Festival, May 19-21st, 2023 as a performing artist, craft artist vendor, and/or
food vendor!
• The Living Traditions Festival hired a team of seasonal part-time staff annual to support
the Performing Arts Program coordinator in planning various aspects of the festival.
They finalized the hiring process for 5 positions, and they started on February 14. The
positions cover Marketing, Vendor Relations, Artist Relations, Volunteers, and our
Education department.
• In mid-Febraruy, Shawnee Johnson met with Dawn Borchardt to work together on
making the Living Traditions Festival more accessible to patrons with disabilities.
• The Living Traditions Festival opened the call for volunteers at the end of February!
Volunteer opportunities include positions assisting with crafts and workshops,
beverages, bocce ball, greeting guests, caring for the grounds, stages, kids' area,
production, school day, and more! For more information and to fill out a form

• On March 241h we notified all performing artists, craft artist vendors and food vendors on
whether they've been selected to be a part of the 2023 Living Traditions Festival.
• Dawn and her Living Traditions team conducted a physical walkthrough of the ground of
City & County Building and Library Square on 3/22 in preparation for Living Traditions
Festival.
Sponsorships
• Felicia Baca and Taylor Knuth attended a meeting with ancestry.com to discuss Living
Traditions sponsorship in early February. Ultimately, they did not choose to sponsor this
year.
• The Arts Council secured an agreement from the Downtown Alliance to sponsor both
Living Traditions Festival and Twilight Concert Series.
• Taylor attended a meeting with a representative from Just Serve to solicit support for the
Living Traditions Festival. While no funds were secured, Just Serve assisted in the
recruitment of volunteers to LTF.
• The Larry H. and Gail Miller Family Foundation approved a grant request for$5000 for
the Living Traditions Festival.
• Additional Sponsors were confirmed for Living Traditions by Felicia Baca including Visit
Salt Lake, and Downtown Alliance which both increase their sponsor levels. Google
Fiber was again confirmed. Other meetings occurred with Bank of America and
Marathon Petroleum the week of February 6th.
• On February 7th, Felicia Baca met with Kate Moss at Bank of America to discuss
Sponsorship opportunities as well as grants and internship processes. They did not
choose to sponsor the festival this year.
• On February 10th, Taylor Knuth, Felicia Baca and Dawn Borchardt attended a meeting
with the leadership team of the Utah Division of Arts and Museums to discuss our
partnership with Living Traditions Festival. They supported with an additional $5,000
grant.
• February 15th, submitted grant application to the George S. and Delores Dore Eccles
Foundation for support of 2023 Living Traditions Festival and the 2023 Twilight Concert
Series. They supported both efforts.
• A $50,000 grant request was submitted to the National Endowment for the Arts on
February 21 st, and was ultimately funded. This application is in support for the Living
Traditions Festival for May 2024 in the category of Grants for Arts Project: Local Arts
Agency.
• Salt Lake City Arts Council Foundation received a $5,000 grant from the Lawrence T.
and Janet T. Dee Foundation for the 2023 Living Traditions Festival.
BUSKING
• Applications for performing artists opened for Busker Fest and Acoustic Stroll in early
April and applications were due April 27`h
• Busker Fest dates were announced on Social media in early March! The fest will take
place over two days downtown on Regent Street and around the Gallivan Center. Our
2023 dates are May 26th and 27th. More information can be found

CITY ARTS GRANTS
City Arts Grants
• The Grants Committee met on January 11th to discuss the scores and
recommendations for the Round Two Project Support Grant applications. The
committee presented the recommendation to full board for official approval and vote at
their January 18th meeting.
• Arts Council Board approved recommendations for Project Support Round 2:
Awarded 32 artists or organizations a total of$70,500: 13 self-identified as BIPOC led
organization or artist and 10 were first time applicants.
• On February 1st, Susan Campbell was interviewed by Bianca Velasquez and Parker
Mortensen for a new podcast, Localmotive. The interview covered The City Arts Grants
Program and the application process. The episode was released on Friday, February
10th, 2023.
• March 1, 2023 the City Arts Grants Program released four grant opportunities for the arts
community in Salt Lake City:
o Tier 1 Artist Career Empowerment Grants—awards will range from $2,000 -
$10,000 for individual artists looking to create a public project in Salt Lake City.
Expect to provide up to 40 grants in this category for a total of$150,000.
o Tier 2 Micro Artist Career Empowerment Grants—awards will range from $250-
$500 for individual artists who need additional funds to provide for their art
practice. Expect to provide 15-25 grants in this category.
o Racial Equity and Inclusion Grants—awards will range from $2,500 - $10,000 for
arts or culture non-profits located in Salt Lake City for programming associated
with racial equity and inclusion. Existing programs are eligible to apply for funding.
Expect to provide $75,000 in grants to an unknown number of organizations.
o Artist in the Classroom Grants - $3,000 stipend to artists for a residency at an
elementary school in Salt Lake City School District.
• Over the month of February, the City Arts Grants Program offered six orientation
sessions for Artist Career Empowerment Grant applications with over 70 individuals
attending these one hour sessions. The attendees were given an overview of the grant
program and then allowed to ask questions. In addition the videos were sent to over 20
additional individuals requesting access to the Tier 1 Artist Career Empowerment Grant
application.
• Two orientation sessions were held for the Racial Equity and Inclusion Grant program as
well. We had 15 representatives from arts and culture nonprofit organizations attend
these sessions.
• The City Arts Grants Program offered individual 30-minute meetings that artists or
organizations could schedule to assist with the grant application. From March 5 —28th
there were 46 scheduled appointments.
National Endowment for the Arts Grants
• Mollie Hosmer-Dillard, an Artist Career Empowerment Grants grantee, showcased her
work, Clouds, in an exhibition at the Salt Lake City Library, 210 E 400 S. The exhibition
ran from December 5th - January 4th, with an opening reception on Tuesday Dec. 6: 6-
7:30pm.
• On January 17th, the Grants Program convened a virtual roundtable discussion with
local artists to discuss the needs of artists in preparation for the release of the second
round of the Artist Career Empowerment grants. In attendance were 11 artists from Salt
Lake City, the grants manager from the Utah Division of Arts and Museums, Arts
Council Staff and Union Creative Agency. Feedback from this discussion was used to
improve the process.
• January 16th, 2023: Artist Career Empowerment Grant Cohort Meeting
Seven of the artists were in attendance. The artists shared updates on their projects.
Staff updated the grantees on the final report process.
• Thursday Feburary 16th, Mollie Dillard-Hosmer, Tier 1 Artist Career Empowerment
Grantee, held an opening for her project at the Day Riverside Library. The main work,
Dissolving Contradictions, is a "multi-vocal" painting in which many underrepresented
individuals in our community participated in creating a larger work. More than 35
workshops were held throughout Salt Lake City at places such as homeless shelters,
refugee locations, community centers, Deaf and Blind school and others.
• The Grants program has held three orientation sessions for the Artist Career
Empowerment Grant process and interacted with 19 individual artists and one orientation
session for the Racial Equity and Inclusion Grant process with 6 organizations in
attendance.
• Felicia Baca attended a focus-group from the NEA on March 24`h regarding the ARPA
grant funding the Arts Council received.
SPECIAL PROJECTS
• Shawnee Johnson is partnering with Todd Oberndorfer to plan a stakeholder
engagement outreach session this spring.
• Shawnee Johnson is working as a member of the Sister Cities Task Force, and they
began meeting this week regarding our sister city Matsumoto, Japan
• Shawnee Johnson met with Third Sun Web+Branding+Design to continue the process of
updating our website. Goals include making the website more accessible, easier to
navigate, and more streamlined. At the conclusion of this contract, the Arts Council will
have a brand new and better functioning product which enhances our ability to execute
our mission, vision, and values. Special Projects will meet with all the program and
project managers with the Arts Council to discuss their needs and wants for the website
updates.
• "What Does the Arts Council Do?" meetings will take place April 12th and May 5th at the
Public Safety Building. Virtual invitations will be sent out to all Department Directors and
Deputy Directors, as well as the Mayor's Office, to attend this exciting meeting.
Arts & Economic Prosperity 6
• Special Projects facilitated a volunteer opportunity for the Gallery Assistant and a
member of the Arts Council Board as they collected Audience Intercept Surveys with
Ballet West for the Arts and Economic Impact Study.
• Survey and Organizational Data collection has been the primary focus throughout the
quarter.
CULTURAL CORE
• Felicia Baca and Matt Castillo from SL Co. Arts attended final interviews for the Cultural
Core Director Position for the Downtown Alliance on January 6th
• The Cultural Core hired a new Program Director, Britney Helmers, who began in
February.
• On February 8th, the Cultural Core Finance Committee met for their quarterly
meeting. They elected a new Chair and Vice Chair, conducted Open Meetings
training, and introduced their new Director Britney Helmers.
ART BARN RENTALS/ HOSTING
• The Art Barn hosted the Guest Writers Series literary reading with Matthew Olzmann
and Carolyn Oliver on February 2nd and a Q&A luncheon the following day.
• On February 12th 12-1 pm —Guest Writer Series Luncheon Q&A
• On February 16th, Working Dog, a graduate student reading series at the University
of Utah, rented space in the Art Barn for 25 attendees.
• March 24th-Art Barn Rental - Guest Writer Series Q &A + Pizza was held between
12-1 pm in Board Room.

ARTS COUNCIL BOARD
The Arts Council Board held monthly Executive Committee meetings and Board
meetings in January and March, and cancelled February.
• The Executive Committee of the Arts Council Board met on January 9th. Major topics
included the Budget Amendment and new board nominations.
• Felicia Baca and Taylor Knuth on January 9th onboarded three new members to our Arts
Council Board of Directors; Kate Jarman Gates, Ebay Hamilton, and Marti Wolford.
• The Arts Council Board met on January 18th to adopt an amended budget, approve final
recommendations of three new Arts Council Board Members to Mayor Mendenhall, and
approval our Project Support Round 2 Grants.
• The Arts Council Board cancelled their February meeting due to heavy committee work
as an alternative for the month.
• Two new board members were appointed to the Arts Council Board in February 22-
Matthew Coles, and Jeff Driggs.
• Felicia Baca and Taylor Knuth onboarded two new board members for the Arts Council
on March 27tn
• Felica Baca and Taylor Knuth conducted the quarterly Strategic Planning Committee for
the Arts Council Board on March 29tn
MAYOR INITIATIVES
Fleet Block
• Felicia Baca attended a Fleet Block Public Space meeting on January 10th to discuss the
upcoming RFP with Parks and Public Land.
• On Tuesday, February 215t, Renato Olmedo-Gonzalez & Felicia Baca met with Makaylah
Respicio-Evans (Public Lands) and Ashley Cleveland (Mayor's Office, Community
Outreach) to discuss the Fleet Block RFP. Future meetings on this topic are expected.
On March 2nd On Tuesday, February 21St, Renato Olmedo-Gonzalez & Felicia Baca met
to discuss the Fleet Block Coordination.
Bridges Over Barriers
• Several meetings were conducted for the Bridges over Barriers (BoB) project. A bid has
been obtained for the tile work. A condition report was completed and a meeting was
scheduled with the mural artist onsite.
• On January 31" , Felicia Baca and Lorena Riffo-Jenson met with Public Utilities to
discuss lighting on the bridges over barriers project.
• Renato Olmedo Gonzalez met with Amy Macdonald, one of the original Bridges over
Barriers facilitators. He asked her organization if they would be interested in providing a
bid for restoration work, which was spendy. We also met with Juan Carlos, who was
involved in the mural to discuss restoration techniques. Lastly, City owned lights were
replaced by Public Utilities, and a bid was required to maintain private lighting sources
that will be facilitated by the Arts Council.
• The Arts Council has forwarded a request from Neighborworks SLC to Public Utilities
regarding safety concerns related to street lighting on the Bridges Over Barriers project.
This concern was brought forth in October and Public Utilities responded that this issue
is not under their purview because they consider it beautification and not utilities, which
we do not concur with. We scheduled a meeting with Public Utilities on January 31 to re-
elevate this as a safety concern for the neighborhood at the request of Neighborworks.
• Renato Olmedo-Gonzalez conducted a site visit to Bridges Over Barriers artwork with
Amy McDonald of Brolly Arts. Ms. McDonald, who was one of the original artists involved
in the creation of this artwork by Lilly Yeh, provided technical and contextual history
about the artwork.
• The Arts Council received a bid from Black and Macdonald regarding upgrading the
lights to LED at the Bridges Over Barriers site. This will be considered in the scope of
the larger project budget. Existing lights are now being maintained and replaced by
Black and Macdonald.
Iconic Westside Public Art Mayor's Goal
• The Public Art Program held meetings with the following departments/divisions to
discuss possible site selection and community engagement strategies in alignment with
the 2023 Mayor's Goal for Public Art: Transportation, Public Lands, Community
Outreach, Love Your Block, Civic Engagement, Facilities, RDA, and a follow-up
brainstorming session with Civic Engagement.
• Additional efforts related to this goal will be engaged throughout the summer.
Bloomberg Public Art Challenge Grant
• Taylor and Susan worked in collaboration to complete a Bloomberg grant to fund
temporary public art projects in Salt Lake City at a large scale.
• The Stewart Family Foundation made a commitment of 25-50K for the Bloomberg Public
Art Challenge Grant.
• On February 2nd, Taylor discussed the Bloomberg Public Art Challenge Grant with
Danielle Brazell, a public art professional who worked on a funded project of this grant
program in LA, CA.
• February 15th, we submitted grant to Bloomberg Philanthropies for the Public Art
Challenge 2022. The grant is titled Wake The Great Salt Lake: "Wake" alludes to three
meanings. First, a literal reference to a wave pattern as a result of disturbance or
displacement. Second, a hopeful term, or waking up or rousing of consciousness. Third,
a reference to the many calls to action regarding an impending wake, or funeral for a
dying entity. If awarded this would be a $1,000,000 grant to be used for temporary public
art projects throughout Salt Lake City related to the Great Salt Lake. We will be notified
later this spring if Salt Lake City is a finalist for this grant.
Other
• At the Request of Mayor Mendenhall, Felicia Baca met with Marla Love of Arte Primero
on February 6th and discussed resources for small businesses, real estate needs, grant
opportunities, and future mural programs.
• The Arts Council requested guidance from the administration on future involvement in
Airport public art projects as well as guidance on how the ordinance for public art may or
may not apply to projects at the Salt Lake International Airport.
• Felicia Baca attended a meeting with Nancy Monteith from Park and Tim Sullivan on
February 215t to discuss the Green Loop activation on 200 E. and 2-400 S beginning in
April.
• Felicia Baca attended a meeting on February 281n with Mayor Mendenhall, Steve Price,
Diane Stewart, and Moana HoCHing to Discuss the idea of an arts and culture district
near the ballpark area.
• Felicia Baca attended a meeting On March 15t with Kaladharaa Dance and Mayor
Mendenhall to connect them with resources for venues and potential space for exhibition
of Indian Classical artforms.
• Felicia Baca attended a meeting on March 1st with Mayor Mendenhall and Jacoby
DuBose called Metatopia that build Extended Reality experiences. The meeting was to
discuss potential opportunities for SLC related to virtual reality.
• Felicia Baca met with Moana HoChing Thursday March 9th to discuss resources in the
arts community and to follow up on a meeting she attended with Mayor Mendenhall. On
January 24tn various City staff attended the Mayor's State of the City virtually, as well as
attended planning meetings for entertainment.
• Felicia Baca attended the Mayor's Panel on Utah Tech Week, that Clark Cahoon
organized on January 25tn
STAFF & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT UPDATES
• Taylor and Shawnee have been worked with Kilo Zamora to train Arts Council board and
staff on issues related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Trainings took place with staff
in February and Board in March. Funds to execute these important trainings come from
our FY23 Budget appropriation related to Professional Development of the Arts Council.
• Shawnee Johnson began and completed the Utah Division of Arts and Museum,
Breaking Barriers training with Art Access.
• In early February, the Arts Council Staff attended a required GRAMA and Social Media
training with City Attorney, Katie Lewis.
• On February 27th, the Salt Lake City Arts Council staff and board, as well as the
Department of Economic Development celebrated the tenure of 12-year Arts Council
employee, Kelsey Ellis. Kelsey has served the city with consistency, diligence, and true
leadership. We will miss Kelsey dearly!
• On Wednesday February 8th, Felicia Baca attended a Financial Management workshop
with Utah Non-Profits Association.
• Felicia Baca worked with Jake Maxwell to track legislative bills related to the arts that
favorable for the Arts. These include bills regarding ticketing fraud and charitable
solicitation permits for non-profits.
• On February 2nd, Taylor Knuth and Felicia Baca completed a two—day effective
supervisor training.
• On March 8th, Taylor Knuth and Felicia Baca conducted Todd Oberndorfer's six-month
review. Todd successfully completed his six-month probationary period.
• Special Projects completed training with Art Access on Breaking Barriers regarding
access for those with disabilities.
• The Deputy Director and Special Projects met with Kilo Zamora regarding IDEA work
and presenting it to the Arts Council Board members for an upcoming training
• Felicia Baca attended the SXSW Conference in Austin TX March 13th+ with colleague
Clark Cahoon. Session thus far included: Civic Design; How to Build Future Cities; The
Economic Impact of Live Music; Driving Diversity with Data; NASA combines art &
science to connect and others.
• Taylor Knuth stepped in on March 15th to facilitate the Arts Council Board of Directors
meeting for Felicia Baca. In total, 12 board members were in attendance and we
conducted a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion training with a consultant, Kilo Zamora
• Felicia Baca conducted a two year evaluation for Taylor Knuth on March 24th and sent
the results to Economic Development.
Budget Process
• Felicia Baca turned in a proposed budget for the Arts Council to the Department of
Economic Development on January 31 st
• Taylor Knuth and Felicia Baca attended a Department of Economic Development
Leadership meeting on March 6th to discuss budget priorities for the Arts Council in
FY24.
• Felicia Baca turned in a budget amendment for the cultural core contract on March 10th,
2023.
• Taylor Knuth presented the FY24 budget request from the arts council to the city's
budget committee on March 17th with other colleagues from the Department of
Economic Development.
OTHER ARTS COUNCIL NEWS
• Local Developer Steve Price has acquired a 27K sq ft building near the Ballpark
Neighborhood and is interested in arts and culture and small business focused
developments as anchors. He is planning an arts focused private event in May to
socialize this idea.
• Felicia Baca attended the opening of The Local on February 25th, a new food hall, which
also included visual art acquisitions from an arts focused local developer.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH /COMMITTEE MEETINGS
• Felicia Baca participated in the Gallivan Center 20-year plan RFP Committee March 20th
• Felicia Baca and Renato Olmedo Gonzalez attended Thriving in Place Committee
meetings on January 4th and February 23rd.
• Felicia Baca/Taylor Knuth attended NBA All star meetings and evnest on January 14th &

• Arts Council Staff attended Board & Comission meetings on March 2nd & April 20th.
• Felicia Baca attended a Seven Canyons Fountain Stakeholder Committee Meeting on
February 14th. The Parks team related that feasibility of a water option is cost prohibitive
and they will be submitting that memo to the Mayor. They will engage the Arts Council in
future discussion with the artists on prospective alterations of RFP processes.
• A press release was sent from the Mayor's Office on March 28th regarding the Dry art
feature decision for the Seven Canyons Fountain. Felicia Baca attended a meeting with
the committee and artists regarding the Seven Canyon Fountain and next steps.
