2. Review and Discuss Nonprofit Applications —CAN
Mr. Markman noted that most CAN scores were in but there were still some scores outstanding, so staff will
give an extra week to Committee members to finish scoring.
Ms. Rigby noted that three of CAN's applicants also applied under DED's Community Grant Program: 1) Salt
Lake Acting Company, 2) UAACC Charitable Foundation, and 3) Create Reel Change. She explained there
could be an issue of duplication if the applicants requested funding for the same programming twice.Mr.
Markman said he'd be happy to look at the applications with DED and determine an issue of duplication or not.
3. Review and Discuss Small Business Applications
There were no questions on the small business applications.
4. Briefing on Upcoming Week's Small Business Applications
Ms. Rigby reminded the Committee they are free to bring up any concerns or feedback about the overall
Community Grant program process during meetings. As she presents the Committee's recommendations to the
City Council, she wants to confidently show the Council that staff accounted for the Committee's concerns or
suggestions to improve the program. Also, DED staff will present the list of recommended nonprofit-
subrecipient awardees to the City Council on September 5f.
Mr.Wessel said the process was very clear and transparent from the beginning, and that staff has been
receptive to the Committee's feedback. One concern was the fact that an applicant with millions in revenue and
professional grant writers, compared to an applicant that is running their business single-handedly and barely
keeping their business afloat, are considered in the same pool of applicants. He feels this isn't the most fair or
equitable way to review applications. Ms. Rigby responded that staff hadn't considered a dollar limit and
thanked Mr.Wessel for his feedback. She added that staff could consider that in future grant programs. Mr.
Coles agreed with Mr.Wessel's concern but noted that the dollar amount of grants would make a huge
difference for smaller businesses or be a smaller help to larger businesses.
Vice Chairperson Anjewierden has enjoyed working with this Committee, who have been active and engaged in
the review process. He felt that staff excelled at taking the Committee's feedback and putting it into action. He
noted a good balance between staff providing structure and expertise to the program while giving the
Committee flexibility and latitude to review and score applications in an independent way.
5. Other Business
Mr.Wessel asked if next weeks'batch of applications would be batch *8. Ms. Rigby said yes. Ms. Rigby
reminded the Committee to submit scores sooner rather than later. She will also find any scores still missing
and notify Committee members.
