AGENDA
I. Call to Order,Welcome, and Introductions
Ms. Meggi Troili welcomed everyone to the meeting and stated the Art Design Board's Mission. Mr.
Renato Olmedo-Gonzalez z asked everyone attending the meeting to introduce themselves.
II. Approval of December 6n', 2023 Minutes(Action)
Ms. Colour Mische put forward the motion to approve the December 6n,2023 minutes as written. Mr.Alex Moya
seconded the motion; all Board members present voted in favor.
III. Donner Trail Park public art opportunity
Mr. Renato Olmedo-Gonzalez did an overview of the Donner Trail Park public art opportunity,which
is being funded by the Parks,Trails, and Open Space General Obligation Bond that was approved by
Salt Lake City voters in November 2022.This public art opportunity seeks to commission a site-
specific art installation that responds to the park's contemplative setting and the unique history of
the site. He then went over the background of the project.Ms. Kira Johnson talked about the public
engagement that Public Lands lead by creating a survey.They survey received over 50o responses.
The views and peacefulness of the park were two popular responses given in their survey.M Mr.
Renato Olmedo-Gonzalez went over the neighborhood of where the park is located. He then went
over the project scope and site description.The park will feature a meditative memorial tree grove.
The Donner Trail Park public art opportunity will allow for the integration for an artist or artist-led
team's artwork and concepts into the overall renovation of the park,in collaboration and
consultation with the project landscape architects. Katherine mentioned that Urban Forestry is really
excited to about this Memorial Tree Grove and that they are hoping to create more memorial tree
groves around the city. Ms. Meggie Troili asked Katherin how Urban Forestry is planning on working
with the artist.
Mr. Renato Olmedo-Gonzalez went over how the park is generally used,the history of the park. He
had the board take turns reading the artwork goals. He then showed images that inspired the design
of the park and went over the budget for the project.The total commission award for this project is
$107,500. He then had board members take turns reading the Artist Qualifications for the project
and went over the finalists process including the proposal development and presentations by the
finalists as well as the project schedule.The board will select three finalists who will be invited to
create site-specific proposals and give presentations on those proposals at the April 2024 Art Design
Board Meeting.
Mr. Renato Olmedo-Gonzalez went over the Artist Shortlist. Before the meeting the Art Design Board
members as well as stakeholders looked through the applications and gave them scores. The
shortlist consists of 3o artists. On the sheet provided to the board where the artists were listed from
highest scores to lowest score,the first 15 artists were highlighted in green and the second 15 were
highlighted in yellow.The 3o artists included Ilan Averbuch,Adam Kuby, Sixto Cordero,John
Fleming, Bill FitzGibbons, Ben Zamora,Jeanine Centuori, Rodrigo Nava,Volkan Alkanoglu, Eileen
Gay, Rob and Shelley Beishline (Tooza Design), Robert Tully,Michael McLaughlin, Ene Osteraas-
Constable, Benjamin Allanoff, Clayton Binkley, Clark Wiegman,Wesley Heiss, Sujin Lim,Aaron
Stephan, Day Christensen,James Dinh,Matthew Galler, Richard Herzog,Luke Archterberg, DiBari
and Associates,John Davis, Ken McCall, and Joshua Wiener.
Mr. Michael Mejia suggested that the board just focused on the green list.Ms.Meggie Troili
suggested that before the board focuses on the green list,that they go over the yellow lists. Tiffany
suggested that Ene Osteraas-Constable be included in the green list.The board agreed to just focus
on the green list.Tiffany suggested to remove Bill FitzGibbons and Tooza Design from the green list,
several other members of the board agreed. Michael Mejia suggested picking an artist that has not
been commissioned before.Angela liked the top three artists, I and their ability to integrate artwork
into landscape architecture.Ms. Coulor Mische said that she was less interested in a standalone
sculpture and more interested in a piece that could be integrated into the landscape.The rest of the
board liked the idea of choosing artists who could integrate their work into the landscape. The board
continued to discuss the top 15 artist submissions and decided on Ilan Averbuch,Adam Kuby, and
Sixto Codero,which happened to be the top three scored applications. Mr. Olmedo-Gonzalez asked
for input from City stakeholders.Ms. Kira Johnson, and Ms. Kathryn Sonntag agreed with the
Board's top 3 choices.Ms.Tiffany Porter made a motion to invite Ilan Averbuch,Adam Kuby, and
Sixto Cordero to submit a proposal for the Donner Trail Park public art opportunity Ms. Colour
Mische seconded the motion.The rest of the board members voted to approve the motion except for
Mr.Alex Moya.
IV. FY23-24 CIP Percent-for-Art discussion
Mr. Renato Olmedo-Gonzalez introduced Ms.Nancy Montieth and Ms. Kat Andra to the Board.Ms.
Nancy Montieth and Ms. Kat Andra gave a presentation on Pioneer Park.Ms.Nancy Montieth went
over the history of the park and the Cultural Landscape Report that was completed for the park.The
park is a national and local historic landmark site. Pioneer park is the only official park located in
downtown Salt Lake City. Mr. Renato Olmedo-Gonzalez commented that the Public Art Program has
no pieces of artwork in Pioneer Park.Ms.Nancy Montieth went over the plans for the park. 9 million
for approvements. Construction on the park won't start for a year.
V. Parks, Trails, and Open Space General Obligation (GO) Bond
Mr. Renato Olmedo-Gonzalez introduced Mr.Tom Millar. Mr.Tom Millar gave a presentation on the
Parks,Trails, and Open Space General Obligation(GO) Bond sites that were selected. Budget for Art
is a little over one million dollars.The parks that will include public art are Donner Park, Glendale
Park, and Warms Springs and North Gateway Park, and Fleetblock. 20 other projects will be
receiving funding through the Bond, and will receive a small piece of public art that will unite the
spaces.

VII.Other Business/Adjourn
Public Art Program Updates: Mr. Renato Olmedo-Gonzalez brought up that several of the board
members are up for renewal and that he will be reaching out to those board members on how they
want to proceed.
Executive Director/Arts Council Updates : Felicia gave an update on Wake the Great Salt Lake public
art project.The Arts Council is working through the process on receiving the funding from
Bloomberg Philanthropies.The next steps will be community listening sessions and this summer the
Arts Council will plan on launching the calls for the first phase of the project.
Ms. Colour Maisch made a motion to close the meeting; Mr.Alex Moya seconded.All Board
members present voted in favor.
Next meeting will be held Wednesday, February 7th, 2024.
