Call to Order and Welcome The meeting was called to order when a quorum was established at around 11:3o am. II. Luncheon The Art Design Board members in attendance and Ms. Laura Haddad and Mr.Tom Drugan of Haddad I Drugan took some time getting to know each other.Ms. Haddad and Mr. Drugan spent the lunch asking questions and getting to know more information about the West Side. Members of the Board and staff members of the Arts Council pointed out that the Westside is composed of several distinctive neighborhoods and residents of these neighborhoods are very community-focused and proud to live on the West Side. Members of the Board who currently live on the West Side mentioned some issues that West Side residents face living in Poplar Grove, which is the neighborhood directly west of the 400 South Viaduct Trail. One of the biggest issues that Poplar Grove residents face is access to the East Side of Salt Lake City.Trains and unsafe bike and pedestrian walkways limit access. One of the goals of the 400 South Viaduct Trail is to create a safer link between the Poplar Grove neighborhood and Downtown Salt Lake City for pedestrians and bicyclists.Ms. Haddad and Mr. Drugan went over the research they had done for the project. They identified social services, cultural and educational centers, and green spaces that exist within a certain radius of the 400 South Viaduct Trail to try to understand the makeup of the community around the viaduct trail. Ms. Haddad and Mr. Drugan showed the Board materials that showed inspirational elements the commissioned artists are using when thinking about design elements of the viaduct trail. Board members gave feedback on some of the elements addressed in the elements including lighting and seating. Several members mentioned the need for the whole trail to be properly lit, so residents felt safe biking and walking across the viaduct trail. Toward the end of the luncheon,Ms. Haddad and Mr. Drugan gave an overview of all the community events they would be participating in during their visit to Salt Lake City.Ms. Haddad and Mr. Drugan will be giving presentations to the West Side Coalition and the Poplar Grove community council.Alongside Avenue Consultants and the City's Transportation Division, they will be leading a focus group meeting and open house at NeighborhoodWorks Salt Lake, which is in the Poplar Grove neighborhood.
