Fountain Restoration
Starting October 2024
Fountain History
(from Design and Use Guidelines 6.6.2.5)
"Both ornamental cast iron fountains located on the west side of Washington Square were
rehabilitated as part of the 1980s renovation project. The original fountains were extensively
researched and retained features were incorporated into the new fountains. Strategies for making
decisions regarding fountains include the following:
• Retain and preserve the existing fountains.
• Protect, stabilize, maintain, and repair the fountains as necessary to maintain the integrity,
appearance, and function anticipated.
• Conduct regular "existing conditions" surveys to establish the condition and integrity of the
fountains and to identify maintenance routines and repairs.
• Regularly assess the function of the fountains and repair and maintain mechanical systems as
required.
• Maintain the mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems associated with the fountains to
ensure they maintain appropriate depths, flows, and functions."
Fountain History
(from Design and Use Guidelines Chapter 3)
• Along with the major 1986 rehabilitation of the building and Washington
Square, the Northwest and Southwest fountains were reconstructed during
this period. They are replicas of the original fountains that had fallen into
disrepair sometime after being installed in the late 1890's. Only a few of the
original pieces of each fountain remain at the time of the 1980s renovation.
• Replicas were reconstructed according to the original design by Robinson Iron,
a metal foundry located in Alabama.
• Each fountain incorporated remnant pieces of the originals, utilizing patterns
purchased from the original manufacturer, J.L. Mott of New York. The south
fountain was reconstructed utilizing an illustration published in a local
newspaper from 1895 for reference. The north fountain was restored utilizing
photographs of the missing pieces and incorporating a similar top piece found
in a local antique shop that was similar to the original (Striefel 1988).

Robinson Iron
• In Jan uary I reached out to Robinson Iron to see if
they would evaluate the conditions of our
fountains.
• Late April Luke Robinson (Grandson) flew out
from Alabama.
• He determined our fountains are indeed in
disrepair and in bad need of restoration.
• Good news: Robinson Iron still has all the molds
and patterns from the original casting.

Robinson Iron Process
• Pickup of the 2 fountains and 8 total remotes and transport to AL. City will hire a crane/
lift locally and pay for that aspect
• Disassemble the fountains and sandblast all to bare metal
• Make repairs where necessary and use new castings where necessary.
• Replace existing baseplates with stainless plate (and associated interior structure if
necessary)
• Replace any existing non-stainless connectors with stainless connectors
• Detach any welded scroll/floral pieces so they may be re-attached via bolting with
stainless connectors
• Install cord seals for lighting where necessary
• Zinc undercoat all pieces, prime, paint and antique in Robinson verde gris finish
• Water tests fountains for levelness
• Photo document the process and forward to City
• Return fountains on RIC truck and install. Cityto provide crane/lift at time of erection
• Touch up fountains as they are installed
