Respectfully, Erin Mendenhall, Mayor DEPARTMENT of ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ERIN MENDENHALL MAYOR LORENA RIFFO-JENSON DIRECTOR Thursday, November 14, 2024 TO: Mayor Erin Mendenhall FROM: Renato Olmedo-González, Public Art Program Manager, and Felicia Baca, Executive Director, Salt Lake City Arts Council RE: Recommendation for Art Design Board Architect Vacancy – Nate King, District 5 The Salt Lake Art Design Board has requested I forward their unanimous recommendation of Mr. Nate King, AIA, NCARB for appointment to the Salt Lake Art Design Board. Mr. King, a licensed State of Utah architect (#10194781-0301), is a Principal Architect at Sparano + Mooney Architecture, a local firm with experience in developing various noteworthy projects. The members of the Design Board all agreed that Mr. King was the most qualified candidate to fulfill the current, open designated Architect seat on the Board as required in Ordinance 2.30. Mr. King will bring a well-informed, engaged, and collaborative voice to the Architect role, which has served a specialized role with the desired expertise necessary on the Art Design Board. Mr. King’s work at Sparano + Mooney Architecture includes design and masterplan work for arts and cultural organizations, including the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art at Utah State University, master plan and pre-design for the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, master plan for Abravanel Hall, and numerous other architectural and design work for private residences and commercial & public buildings. His keen design abilities and deep interest in the arts & culture landscape will add a thoughtful perspective for opportunities with future public art projects. Mr. King is a resident of District 7, which is currently represented by Ms. Meggie Troili. Ordinance 2.30 permits up to two Art Design Board members to come from the same district. Mr. King expressed that in his personal and professional life, he values and recognizes the impact of carefully curated spaces in the public sphere. In his application, he states: “My experience working as an Architect on projects with local art institutions include the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art and Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art in Logan, UT will allow me to bring valuable insight to the Art Design Board. With a focus on Arts + Culture, [Sparano + Mooney’s] practice has also completed such projects as the Daines Concert Hall and currently the America First Credit Union Performing Arts Center in St. George, UT.” Overall, Mr. King is an enthusiastic person who deeply values the power of art within our built landscape and is honored to be nominated and eager to begin this volunteer position. All members of the Art Design Board reviewed two applications for the specific role of Architect within the Board. Both applicants participated in interviews run by current Salt Lake City Arts Council Staff and Art Design Board members. The Board discussed and selected Mr. King during their November 6th, 2024 meeting. Thank you for considering the Salt Lake Art Design Board’s recommendation of Mr. King for the open position on the Board. His application has been attached for your reference.
