FY25 City Arts Grants
Sophie Arango Nebeker Amount Recommended $5,000
Partnering with Maven District, I will contribute my unique designs to the collection of pieces that already
live around 900 S and 200 E. I am working with Maven for the value they place in creating community
around art related activities and how the arts and wellbeing focused small businesses create a vibrant
and creative community space. Engaging the community through the design selection, painting, and
'opening' of the finished piece will add value and meaning in this project.
Stephanie Garcia Amount Recommended $5,000
UNDERRATED addresses a central problem mid-career Latine artists face if they stay in Utah. There is
no shortage of talented performers, but there is little or no opportunity to see experimental work from
major choreographic centers in Latin America. Large institutions often make an effort to include both
experimental work (usually by white, Anglo-American artists) and work targeted to Latinx/Chicanx
audiences (which tends to overemphasize "traditional"forms over experimentation). This platform affords
the opportunity to see the intersection of those two goals which are usually considered separately, adding
to the vibrancy of Salt Lake City for both the audiences and the artists we serve.
801 Salon Amount Recommended $5,000
PlayGround Dance Project is a flash incubator that provides five choreographers and twenty dancers the
opportunity to create new works in a one-week experience. The dancers and choreographers are given
one week, or eight hours, to create five new pieces of work to be performed in a fully-produced show at
the Leona Wagner Black Box Theater. The project is designed to support freelance dance artists local to
Salt Lake City and surrounding areas, providing them with time, space, and a platform to create and
explore.
Trevor Dahl Amount Recommended $5,000
This mural project is a collaboration between myself and Salt Lake City nonprofit The Road Home. It will
be located on the street-facing, west side entrance of The Road Home's headquarters at 1415 South
Main St., SLC. Above the ground-level windows and entrance are four adjacent square panels forming a
combined canvas of 320 sq/ft, perfect for a mural that brings a powerful message of hope, resilience, and
inclusivity.
Discovery Gateway Children's museum Amount Recommended $2,500
We are requesting funds to help support our annual World Connections Festival, hosted at our downtown
Salt Lake City facility. This year, we are further focusing on expansion by increasing our outreach efforts
to diversify both the performers and the audience for the festival. We are planning to have at least 6
unique performances (from varied artistic disciplines) throughout the festival in our museum. We will also
be hosting vendors on-site to sell art pieces, culturally-influenced works, and food from a diverse array of
backgrounds.
Salt Lake Chinese Choir Amount Recommended $5,000
The Salt Lake Chinese Choir is honored to present a proposal for funding to support our 2025 Annual
Concert, an essential cultural initiative that enhances Salt Lake City's artistic landscape. This project
seeks to bridge East and West through a groundbreaking series of musical commissions, showcasing the
power of cross-cultural dialogue. With a curated program of newly commissioned works, this concert will
deepen cultural exchange while demonstrating the richness of Chinese musical heritage.
Suazo Business Center Amount Recommended $5,000
The mural project will celebrate Latino and Hispanic heritage, with the design heavily influenced by Latino
culture. The theme could emphasize community, diversity, and belonging, reflecting the shared
experiences of the Latino and broader Salt Lake City community. The mural will be 200 square feet in
size, with input from community members on the design and opportunities for them to participate in the
installation. This involvement will foster engagement and create a sense of ownership within the
community.

FY25 City Arts Grants
Pygmalion Productions Amount Recommended $5,000
Full production of Be Here Now by Debora Zoe Laufer; 10 performances at the Rose Wagner between
May 2-May 17, 2025. Be Here Now is an existential play with broad themes. That seems lofty, but we
believe the wonderfully drawn characters and their journeys will personally resonate with audiences. The
play makes room for life's dualities:joy and sorrow, pleasure and pain, depression and exhilaration.
Glendale Community Council Amount Recommended $2,500
This year, as we seek to increase space for programming and parking, we plan to hold the event at
International Peace Gardens. As we head into our third year, we seek to add new elements to the event,
including: Commissioning an artist to create a large-scale interactive art project to bring both a visual
draw and an exciting and engaging activity. Commissioning an artist to create a sidewalk mural in a
location within the park approved by the city Featuring an en-plein-air art activity focused on the themes
and flowers of the gardens. Hosting a Micro-Movie-Theatre featuring short films from Utah Film Center.
Collaborating on a Flower Parade through the park.
Bomba Marile Amount Recommended $5,000
Bomba Marile will use the Project Support Grant to help fund for 2 of a 4 part series of events in 2025.
We will hold the spring event in April at the Sorenson Unity Center and bring renowned elder Afro Puerto
Rican bomba practitioner Jose Nuno Calderon Pou directly from Puerto Rico. The community involvement
event will consist of Nuno giving free community bomba dance workshops focusing on our connection to
the earth. Our second event will take place in July 2025 at the Sorenson Unity Center. We will be
featuring Jeanitza Aviles, a afro-Puerto Rican woman who will come directly from Puerto Rico to give two
free bomba dance workshops in one day followed by live bomba music and dance.
Salt Lake Symphony Amount Recommended $5,000
A series of performances that will be held through out the year. Performance events will be in Libby
Gardner Hall unless otherwise noted. Other informal outdoor summer concerts in June-July. Additional
community and educational outreach activities will be held throughout the season at Wasatch front
schools, care centers, and other community venues.
Ai Ya Ceramics Amount Recommended $5,000
Experimenting is a groundbreaking community art program that brings together 14 LGBTQ+ artists of
color for a unique ceramic exhibition at Under the Umbrella. This exhibition featured as part Clay Around
Town series for the 2025 The National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts's (NCECA) Conference.
Part of this program there will be a networking event for QTBIPOC artists to community within the ceramic
arts field and there will be small one day workshops at UTU to teach some basic ceramic skills before and
after NCECA to the local community.
Together Arts Community Studio Amount Recommended $5,000
This project's goal is to provide free art classes for the residents of Salt Lake City, particularly those on
the west side and those who would otherwise not have access to arts education. Our classes
demonstrate innovation by hiring local artisans to teach these classes to their immediate neighbors. By
offering a diverse variety of mediums, our classes demonstrate a dedication to creativity and artistic
exploration. Beginner Stained Glass in February, Leather Tooling in March, Granny Square Afghans in
April, Beginner Drawing in May, and Bookbinding Gay Agendas in June.
Improv Salt Lake Amount Recommended $2,500
We are producing improv comedy shows open to the public that run for 2 hours at a time. The artists
participating in the project are all local performers living in Utah who come from various backgrounds and
skill levels. The shows will take place at The Alliance Theatre in Salt Lake City, twice a month. This is
performance art and a ticketed event, but we will also be offering free workshops that the public can
participate in at no charge. The funds requested will be used to reserve and rent the theatre, pay artist
fees, pay for staff to run sound and lighting, and to cover advertising /marketing.

Project Support Round 2
Alleyways Amplified Amount Recommended $5,000
This year the Main Street Fashion Week is expanding its programming into three days of fashion and
music events in the downtown core. The experience will include art exhibits, musical performances,
creative networking opportunities, and more - concluding where it all began with the fashion show in the
Eccles Theater. There will be something for everyone, from families to passionate fashion
enthusiasts. These activations will all involve key community stakeholders such as student organizations,
local artists, and well-loved establishments.
Aloe Corry Amount Recommended $5,000
We propose a series of tapestry banners to act as incantations, exhortations, and warnings from the Salt
Lake. We'll create these works with methods that echo the building up of sediment layers, water levels,
and the natural history of the lake (including natural dyes and pigments, salt and wax resist, sun-printing,
and weaving/unraveling). These banners will be created by artists Aloe Corry and Ron Linn. They'll then
pass through the hands of local communities as processional objects, making their way to a culminating
exhibition in SLC.
Ashley Jian Thomson Amount Recommended $5,000
A one-day event that will be hosted at Under the Umbrella. There are 3 parts to this event: A workshop,
Performances, and a Locally made goods Market. Suggested itinerary includes: 3pm writing workshop by
Under the Umbrella on lower level, 4pm Show#1 in storefront, 5pm Market opens in courtyard, 7pm
Show#2 in storefront, 9pm Market closes in courtyard. Free admission to all events; audience may
choose to purchase locally-made goods from the market.
Asian Association of Utah Amount Recommended $5,000
The Asian Association of Utah is kicking off a new chapter with receiving the Lowe's Hometown grant this
year to renovate its old office that was previously used as a storage building. Part of this renovation
includes a mural project on the outside of the building to highlight AAU's history in this state since 1977
and the community that AAU serves. This is a community mural where the artist will be collecting
feedback from community members that AAU historically and currently serve.
Aspen Winds Amount Recommended $2,500
"A Trip to the Moon" show features a new composition story piece, "Johnny in the Moon", a variety of
woodwind quintet pieces focused on the moon and culminates with a live soundtrack accompanying the
1902 French silent film, "A Trip to the Moon". Our small ensemble size (5 performers) gives us the
flexibility to perform in small, intimate places that allow us to interact and connect with audiences.
Cache Youth Orchestras Amount Recommended $2,500
Our free concert at the State Capitol on March 22nd will feature all of our students. We anticipate having
300-400 people attend from the community. We will have approximately 30 parent volunteers helping us
as chaperones. About 75% of our students have never visited the Utah State Capitol before. 75% of our
students have never attended a Utah Symphony concert before or are attending their second time (with
their first time being with CYO two years ago).
Chamber Music Society of Salt Lake City Amount Recommended $5,000
Two chamber music concerts by internationally acclaimed artists. March 4, 2025 -The Dover Quartet with
Marc-Andre Hamelin. March 27, 2025 -The Leonkoro Quartet.
Chuck Landvatter Amount Recommended $5,000
The wall I intend to paint is east-facing and highly visible from foot and car traffic on 100 South, just east
of 700 East. I will be the primary (and likely only) artist working on this, although I may offer my
Westminster University students a chance to observe and maybe participate somehow as well. The
logistics are pretty simple and I will really only need a couple ladders. My idea is to paint a large-scale
vanitas with aerosol and latex acrylic paint. The aesthetic will resemble my typical work, but I will stray a

little by mimicking a graphite pencil with the spray paint for a portion of the composition, in order to make
it look like a large sketch.
Community Building Services Amount Recommended $5,000
The Community Building Services seeks $5,000 to fund for FY25 Artist/Community Building Services
Project Support for refugees and immigrants. We believe that the arts in the form of a Dance project will
prepare youth with dance knowledge, skills, and confidence to perform during community and public
events on various occasions. Additionally, this project enhances opportunities for the community and
youth to come together. The project will take place at 1860 South 300 East Salt Lake City, UT 84115
Columbus Education Center on Saturdays from 11 am to 2 pm. The types of art activities include learning
various dancing steps, vocalizing, and acting.
Grandview for Good Amount Recommended $5,000
