HomeMy WebLinkAbout03/18/2025 - Meeting Materials Application ID 65 We seek$150 to purchase an English Walnut Tree,some watering accessories(tree watering Project bag),as well as some of the water.Walnuts are investment in long-term food sustainability Description and nutrition.Walnuts provide a valuable,shelf-stable source of essential nutrients, including Omega-3 fatty acids,and offer a versatile ingredient for a variety of culinary applications. I want to contribute to the area's production of produce.We have several neighbor's with fruit trees, but have not seen any walnut trees nearby. Nut trees tend to be more expensive than Project Impact fruit trees so we haven't felt comfortable making such a large purchase.We would be honored to be considered for this grant. The English Walnut tree is well-suited for Salt Lake City's climate and will contribute to local Sustainability food resilience. Unlike more perishable crops,walnuts are shelf-stable for up to six months Practices at room temperature and up to three years when stored in a freezer, making them an ideal, long-term food source. By adding this tree to our local landscape,we promote food security and provide a nutritious,homegrown alternative to commercially processed nuts. We are only asking for$150 since we think we can find a tree for about$125.The remaining Budget $25 would be for watering accessories and extra water used for the most important year of any transplanted trees life. If we are not chosen for this grant,this is something that we will try to do on our own in the Additional next five years, but we are eager to start a project as soon as possible that will take several Information years to bear fruit.We are grateful for the opportunity to apply to this program and hopefully meet others who are striving to make Salt Lake City better. Application ID 68 1 would like to use the grant moneyto build raised garden beds with drip line irrigation in my Project backyard so that I can grow food, medicine,and flowers for my household.This grant will help Description subsidize how expensive it is to start a garden,and I will be able to continue to grow food in my backyard for many years to come once this is set up. This project is important to me because I believe having fresh food from my garden will improve my health and overall happiness. I will be able to feed my family and friends with this Project Impact food and share extra garden items with my neighbors.Gardening will benefit my overall health and wellness. Food is getting more expensive every year,and the skills I will learn in gardening in my backyard will benefit me and my family. I would be building my garden with a drip line to ensure water is not wasted and will use a Sustainability timer that automatically waters my garden for me without waste. In addition,this garden will Practices be replacing grass which is high water use but doesn't result in anything like a garden does. I will also grow flowers and pollinator friendly plants that will benefit local pollinators. Description Project Impact Raised garden beds are easier to maintain and provide better pest and irrigation control. It will allow me to continue gardening as I age and my mobility and other abilities diminish. Sustainability It will prevent erosion,water waste,excessive labor, and promote a healthier environment for Practices growing food. Budget I will need help building the boxes and supplying them with should and compost. I will probably use most of this fund for compost delivery. Additional Information Application ID 71 Project We have raised beds and this grant will allow us to buy compost to mend our soil and buy Description starts for our upcoming growing season.We garden as a family but I also open our home and garden to a friendly toddler co-op I host with friends. This project is important because we prioritize a healthy diet.We think it's crucial our child has access to outdoor garden space to learn and explore. Information Application ID 83 Project Currently building a 70 square foot raised vegetable garden. Planting bee friendlyflowers and Description plants as well as acquiring bee hives. For self sustainability and increased bee population. My over flow of vegetable production Project Impact will be given away to teachers and students. Sustainability It will include natural pest control such as marigold and FG Diatomaceous Earth.As well as Practices aid in honey bee populations. Budget This project will cost thousands.The$250 will go directly to building materials,drip line and soil additions. It will be a huge help. Additional Information Application ID 95 Project I would like to make some cold frames to use with my raised beds to extend the growing Description season. This would allow us to start tender plants earlier and possibly grow some hardy plants over Project Impact the winter. It would definitely extend the length of time that we have access to garden fresh produce. At home food production is the essence of a sustainable and environmentally beneficial Sustainability practice.Sustainable, in that the soil only improves overtime (with organic methods.) My wife is Latin and a new US Citizen. We have 2 kids, 14 and 8 years old. Additional My mother in law lives with us. She is also Latin,85 years old, and doesn't speak English.
