3. Review Community Grant application scores/questions
Chair Schwarz explained that the group will review the Community Grant applications
that were not discussed at the previous meeting to address any discrepancies in score,
questions, and considerations regarding the proposed projects. Chair Schwarz
reminded committee members that they may change their scores. Because Vice Chair
Ramirez was absent, Chair Schwarz shared the written feedback she provided for each
application.
The Committee discussed the applications submitted by the following 14
organizations:
• New American Goat Club
• Odd Lots, LLC &The Community Surplus Exchange
• Orenda Urban Farm
• Outreach Garden, East Central Community Council
• Proyecto Xilonen
• Raw Eddys
• River Jordan Network
• Rose Park Bee Club
• Rose Park Community Garden Share
• Scrumptious
• Twig & Branch Gardens
• Urban Pepper Project
• Utah Crisis Food Response
• Vanavil Community Garden
For each applicant listed, Chair Schwarz gave a brief overview of their organization and
grant proposal and prompted committee members to discuss discrepancies in scores,
questions, and other thoughts on the application and/or organization. Throughout the
discussion, committee members made changes to their overall recommendation
scores.
The Committee discussed the following topics while assessing scores:
• The location of an organization's site relative to Salt Lake City's boundary and
where they conduct their work

• Whether an organization has established partnerships to amplify their impact
and execute their vision
• Funding limitations regarding the amount of grant funding requested (around
$106,000)vs the amount available for awards (about $33,500)
• The impact a grant award may have on an organization's ability to complete their
proposed project
• Whether organizations were funded by the Food Microgrant Program in 2023
and/or2024
• Whether goals outlined in grant proposals align with the SLC Food Microgrant
Program goals
• The importance of maintaining some consistency in scores amongst proposals
that are similar in scope
• Whether a proposed project already exists in the community and may duplicate
existing efforts where there's opportunity for collaboration
• The amount of detail included in a proposal budget and whether budgeted items
could be obtained at a lower cost
The Committee agreed that each member will take some time before the next meeting
to review their scores and make any final revisions.
The Committee discussed how the different scoring categories should be weighed to
determine the final ranking of applications. The group examined the relative weight
each scoring category received last year and made several changes, including changing
the relative weight of the Mission, Leadership, Partnerships, and Timeline categories
from a 2 to a 1, so a score received in those categories will be counted once in an
applicants'total score, and changing the relative weight of the Success category from a
1 to a 2, so a score received in that category will be counted twice in the total score.
The relative weight of all other scoring categories remained the same, with the
Population Served, Project Proposal, Project Impact, and Overall Recommendation to
Fund categories remaining at a relative weight of 3 to be counted three times in the
total score, and the Evaluation, Sustainability, and Budget categories remaining at a
relative weight of 1.
