The performance juxtaposes multiple (often uncomfortable) histories of American expansion. The production highlights Powell as a charismatic explorer who framed the Western landscape as a sublime yet conquerable frontier, while the venue itself represents the most violent tools of westward expansion, having served — for example— as deployment grounds for the soldiers who perpetrated the 1863 Bear River Massacre against the Northwest Band of the Shoshone Nation. This historically layered site creates a powerful stage for examining the settler-colonial legacy of the American West, inviting audiences to confront the complex intersections of exploration and empire. 12 FY26 City Arts Grants IJ &Jeanne Wagner Jewish Community Center Recommended Amount: $4,000 The I.J. & Jeanne Wagner Jewish Community Center (the JCC) proposes a unique partnership with the 92nd Street Y, New York (92NY), a world-renowned cultural institution, to bring a curated series of live-streamed arts events to Salt Lake City audiences. 92NY has hosted groundbreaking programs in performance, creation, dialogue, and Jewish culture for over 150 years. Peter Hay Recommended Amount: $4,000 "What have we lost?" explores the question emerging in the aftermath of a catastrophe when looking back and reflecting on what is left and what is lost. This piece started with concern about what will be left due to the severe consequences of climate change and species extinction. But "What have we lost?" goes beyond, especially in a time when the denial of all aforementioned has become the mainstream narrative in the USA while the opposite narrative is growing in Mexico and many other countries around the world. The lack of awareness about our daily contribution to environmental destruction is a lack of compassion for life, the natural world, and other human beings. The embodied-based research of this piece explores touch and bodily connection through choreographic scores in the hope of"finding the black thread" to answer today's question of what to do to "stay" human. First and foremost, we remind the audience that they are the invisible partners to our dance, deconstructing the depersonalized, aestheticized bodies of earlier eras of(post-)modern dance. I want to bring this collaborative mindset to the board—to help support funding decisions, programming initiatives, and public art commissions that speak to local histories and collective futures. I am especially interested in how we can better serve emerging artists, undocumented creators, and culturally rooted art forms that don't always fit within dominant funding frameworks. As someone who navigates both the academic and community arts worlds, I'm equipped to bridge those gaps. I also bring experience in arts administration, grant writing, and public engagement— skills I've developed through fellowships, residencies, and leading community art projects. Serving on this board is not just a personal opportunity for leadership growth; it is a commitment to ensuring that the arts remain a dynamic,justice- oriented force in our city. I would be honored to contribute my lived experience, creative skills, and policy curiosity toward shaping a more vibrant and equitable cultural landscape. Community Service My community service centers on using Other Information art as a tool for cultural empowerment, equity, and social change. In Fall 2024, 1 completed a fellowship with Voices for Utah Children, facilitating bilingual storytelling workshops and co-curating a community exhibition that uplifted the experiences of undocumented youth and immigrant families. As a current executive board member of Davis Dreamers, I helped organize DACA renewal clinics and college readiness events, blending advocacy with cultural programming. I currently volunteer with the Queer Spectra Arts Festival, supporting Spanish-language outreach, adjudication, and accessibility. I've served as an adjudicator for the Salt Lake Arts Festival and have exhibited with the Salt Lake Arts Council, Finch Lane Gallery, and The BLOCKS.These roles have deepened my understanding of public arts funding, equity in curation, and the need for inclusive platforms. As a teaching artist, I've led workshops with the Leonardo Museum, Huntsman Cancer Institute, Kimball Art Center, and Park City's Latino Arts Fest, focusing on healing, bilingual instruction, and intergenerational learning. I now serve as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Utah, where I mentor students and support arts access efforts https://slcgov.my.salesforce.com/a9FV10000007CNp2AM/p 2/3 6/10/25, 10:14 AM BCA-02689-Salesforce-Unlimited Edition across campus and community spaces. Each generation has watched the city grow and change and worked toward making it a better place and i wish to do the same. I joined my local community council (East Bench Community Council)over 5 years ago because i wanted to help bring a voice to those who are often not represented in this type of meeting. Many young professionals, or families with kids are not aware of,or unable to take part in discussions on city matters. They often cannot attend a weeknight meeting https://slcgov.my.salesforce.com/a9FV10000007Rxx2AE/p 1/2 6/10/25, 10:59 AM BCA-02714-Salesforce-Unlimited Edition when they have young kids going to soccer practice or they are trying to do homework.
