Airport Advisory Board Meeting Minutes
17 June 2020
2
Cyndy Miller called the meeting, held via Web-Ex to order at 8:02 a.m.
AGENDA
A. Minutes
A motion was made by J.T. Martin and seconded by Shawn Milne to approve the minutes of
May 20, 2020 as presented. All votes were affirmative; motion passed.
B. Director’s Report
Bill Wyatt, Executive Director, updated the Airport Advisory Board regarding current events.
Bill Wyatt provided a brief update on passenger volumes, financial position, and re-phasing.
J.T. Martin asked about international travel volume. Bill Wyatt indicated the only direct,
international flight occurring is to Mexico City. It looks hopeful for Amsterdam to begin in
August.
Mayor Burton indicated he has been approached by a developer that would like to meet with
airport personnel to discuss opportunities. The property in question is in North Salt Lake. How
should he handle this request? Bill Wyatt indicated he should work with airport staff to explain
the situation and set up a meeting.
J.T. Martin inquired about new technology around COVID-19 and asked if the airport was
considering any new measures. Bill Wyatt shared he attends a weekly call with large hub airports
and this topic comes up frequently. Nothing is being considered at this time.
C. Airport Redevelopment Program (ARP) Update – Mike Williams, ARP Director,

AGENDA: DISCUSSION ITEM (C)
DATE: 15 July 2020
TO: Airport Advisory Board
FROM: Bill Wyatt, Executive Director
SUBJECT: The New SLC Art Program Update
Nancy Volmer, Airport Communication and Marketing Director will present an update
on The New SLC Art Program (presentation on file).
Link to video presentation: https://youtu.be/qHHUlyvVpFQ
The New SLC Art Program
The Canyon
The Canyon evokes the Utah landscape and spans 362 feet, roughly the length of
a football field, using 2.5 acres of composite fabric and the equivalent of seven miles
of aluminum tubing. The entire work, located in the spine of the Terminal building, will
consist of 412 individual tensile membrane fins which have the ability to be illuminated
by LED lights.
1
Artist, Gordon Huether
The Plates
The Plates call to mind the exposed earthen strata visible throughout the canyon walls.
Individual “plates” will be attached to structural columns throughout the Arrivals Lobby
on Level Two of The New SLC, providing a strong visual demarcation of the area and
differentiating the Arrivals Lobby space from the Baggage Claim area. The lowermost
plate on each column provides seating. The additional plates ascending the structural
columns accommodate sight lines throughout the Arrivals Lobby, enabling travelers
to see the entire airport lobby through the horizontal gaps created by the spacing of
plates. The Plates add a horizontal element to the vertical dynamic of The Canyon.
2
Artist, Gordon Huether
The Falls
Rising 80 feet from the ground floor to the ceiling, The Falls sculpture is a vibrant
addition to all three floors of The New SLC Terminal. The Falls sculpture comes
alive with color from the natural light, creating intriguing color shadows in the vicinity.
Colorful, light-sensitive dichroic glass with light-refracting glass rods project ever-
changing colors and patterns on adjacent surfaces.
3
Artist, Gordon Huether
Northern Light
Northern Light opens in the North Concourse as part of the second phase of The
New SLC. It draws on elements of The Falls and incorporates the same colorful light
interactions as the 65-foot-tall escalator wall. Northern Light will be fabricated out of
500 glass rods and 300 dichroic glass panels. The framework holding the half-sphere
structure together is made of stainless steel and weighs 3.1 tons, including the weight
of the glass.
4
Artist, Gordon Huether
River Tunnel
The River Tunnel will open as part of the second phase of The New SLC and is
inspired by the beauty of Utah. The River Tunnel will reflect the rivers that flow through
the state’s canyons and will be featured in the 1,000-foot long Central Tunnel that
connects travelers from the main terminal to the North Concourse.
5
Artist, Gordon Huether
You are Here
You are Here, a leaded glass wall created by Jenkyn A. Powell, is an abstraction
based on a cellular map of molecular biological process that occur in living cells. These
biological pathways include the Krebs Cycle, glycolysis and others that convert matter
into energy on a cellular level in life. This was originally located in the International
Terminal. It will be located on the west wall of The Gateway, where the evening sun will
illuminate the piece.
Flying Machines
The Flying Machines by Dennis Smith are whimsical mobiles that have been on
display in the current airport, but are undergoing restoration at the artists’ studio. The
Flying Machines, six in total, will be on display in The New SLC - three in the first
phase in Concourse A, and three in the second phase in Concourse B.

Whimsy Walls
The work of 18 local and national artists will adorn a wall in each of the New SLC
restrooms. The large-scale art walls – or Whimsy Walls – are unique vinyl wall wraps
that were created from original artwork. The Whimsy Walls are intended to inspire an
immersive and engaging experience for travelers. Artists were encouraged to submit
work that reflects the culture, community, landscape and spirit of Utah. The 24 pieces
of art were selected in collaboration with the Salt Lake City Arts Council Board. To see
the selected artwork for this project on the airport’s website, click here.
World Map
The World Map in Terminal 1 has long been a passenger favorite. In The New SLC, a
reimagined version - a high resolution photo image that was transcribed on a 10 foot by
10 foot piece of translucent glass - is displayed in the Greeting Room.
7
The New SLC Art Wall
A Salt Lake City-based artist team has been selected to create The New SLC Art Wall.
Soonju Kwon, Reihaneh Noori and Hanna Vaugh will design, fabricate and install a
unique and original work of art titled “Near Distance,” to be placed in the TSA security
checkpoint area. The artwork selected speaks to the spirit, culture, people and context
of Utah. The artist team was selected in collaboration with the Salt Lake City Arts
Council Board.
Mid-Concourse Tunnel
Murals
The Mid-Concourse Tunnel will open in October to provide access to the North
Concourse. Four 144-foot murals will depict Utah’s four seasons. The tunnel will be the
exclusive avenue for passengers to move between two concourses for approximately
three years.
8
SLC’s Fine Art Collection
The Salt Lake City International Airport has been interested in art and architecture
ever since the World Map was installed in Terminal 1 in 1961. The airport has worked
closely with Gordon Huether to curate the fine art collection that will be on display in
The New SLC. The collection includes a mix of local and national artists with a variety
of mediums that speak to the landscape and culture of Utah. More than 150 fine art
pieces will move to The New SLC. Some pieces will be exhibited in the non-secure
side of the airport, while others will be on display in the administrative offices.
