Executive Order No. 1 of 2022: Declaring Juneteenth a City Holiday Issue Date: April 29, 2022 Subject: Declaring Juneteenth a City Holiday Authority Signature: Mayor Erin Mendenhall Juneteenth National Freedom Day (Juneteenth) is a federal and Utah state holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans. Juneteenth was originally commemorated on June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Texas to inform enslaved African-Americans that they were free, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth became a federal holiday on June 17, 2021, and Governor Spencer Cox signed a law on March 24, 2022, declaring Juneteenth a Utah state holiday. Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall desires to designate Juneteenth as an official City holiday pursuant to this Executive Order. NOW THEREFORE, Mayor Erin Mendenhall declares that Juneteenth is an official City holiday for City employees to observe. In 2022, because June 19th falls on a Sunday, the official City holiday will fall on June 20,2022. In future years,ifJune 19 falls on a Tuesday,Wednesday,Thursday or Friday,the holiday will be observed the preceding Monday. If June 19 falls on a weekend, it will be observed the following Monday.
