SALT LAKE CITY ORDINANCE
No. 53 of 2000
(Amending Salt Lake City Sign Ordinance)
AN ORDINANCE AMENDING THE SALT LAKE CITY SIGN ORDINANCE TO
ALLOW FOR PAINTED WALL SIGNS.
WHEREAS, the Salt Lake City zoning code contains regulations regarding the placement
and size of signs within the City; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of Salt Lake City, Utah, finds that after public hearings
before its own body and before the Planning Commission that portions of the Salt Lake City
zoning code which relate to signs should be amended to allow for painted wall signs, and to
provide greater clarification as to what does or does not constitute a painted wall sign;
NOW, THEREFORE,be it ordained by the City Council of Salt Lake City, Utah:
SECTION 1. That the definition of"wall sign" set forth in Section 21A.46.020 of the
Salt Lake City Code shall be and hereby is amended to read as follows:
"Wall sign" means a sign that is painted on a building wall containing the name of the
business and/or its logo.
SECTION 2. Section 21A.46.040.M of the Salt Lake City Code shall be and hereby is
enacted to read as follows:
M. Murals. All or any portion of painted art work which would not constitute a sign
under this chapter.
SECTION 3. Section 21A.46.060 of the Salt Lake City Code shall be and hereby is
amended to read as follows:
21A.46.060 Signs specifically prohibited in all zoning districts.
The following exterior signs, in addition to all other signs not expressly permitted by this
chapter, are prohibited in all zoning districts and shall not be erected:
A. Animated signs excluding public service signs;
B. Any snipe sign;
C. Balloons;
D. Bench signs;
E. Portable signs, except where specifically permitted by district sign regulations;
F. Signs overhanging the property line other than signs that are permitted under the
sign regulations applicable to each coning district;
G. Signs which are structurally unsafe, hazardous or violate the uniform building
code or the uniform fire code;
H. Signs located near streets which imitate or are easily confused with official traffic
signs and use words such as "stop," "look," "danger," "go slow," "caution" or"warning," except
where such words are part of the name of a business or are accessory to parking lots; and
I. Painted signs which do not meet the definition of wall signs.
SECTION 4. Section 21A.46.070.J.7 of the Salt Lake City Code shall be and hereby is
amended to read as follows:
7. Wall signs. Wall signs may extend to the top of the vertical building wall. The
size of a wall sign shall be determined by measuring the maximum dimensions of the polygon
containing all words and logos.

SECTION 5. The Table located at Section 21A.46.120.D.3 of the Salt Lake City Code
entitled"Sign Type, Size and Height Standards for the A District," shall be and hereby is
amended as set forth on Exhibit A attached hereto.
SECTION 6. The Table set forth in Section 21A.46.090.A.4 of the Salt Lake City Code
entitled "Sign Type, Size and Height Standards for the CN District," shall be and hereby is
amended as set forth on Exhibit B attached hereto.
SECTION 7. The Table set forth at Section 21A.46.090.A.5 of the Salt Lake City Code
entitled"Sign Type, Size and Height Standards for the CB District," shall be and hereby is
amended as set forth on Exhibit C attached hereto.
SECTION 8. The Table set forth in Section 21A.46.090.B.4 of the Salt Lake City Code
entitled "Sign Type, Size and Height Standards for the CS District," shall be and hereby is
amended as set forth on Exhibit D attached hereto.
SECTION 9. The Table set forth in Section 21A.46.090.C.3 of the Salt Lake City Code
entitled"Sign Type, Size and Height Standards for the C-C District," shall be and hereby is
amended as set forth on Exhibit E attached hereto.
SECTION 10. The Table set forth in Section 21A.46.110.A.3 of the Salt Lake City Code
entitled "Sign Type, Size and Height Standards for the D-1 and D-4 Districts," shall be and
hereby is amended as set forth on Exhibit F attached hereto.
SECTION 11. The Table set forth in Section 21A.46.115.A.3 of the Salt Lake City Code
entitled"Sign Type, Size and Height Standards for the G-MU District," shall be and hereby is
amended as set forth on Exhibit G attached hereto.
SECTION 12. EFFECTIVE DATE. This Ordinance shall take effect immediately upon
its first publication.
