SALT LAKE CITY ORDINANCE
Mo. 6 of 1992
(Amending Sections 21.92.385 and
21.92.485 dealing with low profile signs)
AN ORDINANCE AMENDING SECTIONS 21.92.385 AND 21.92.485 OF
THE SALT LAKE CITY CODE, DEALING WITH LOW PROFILE SIGNS.
WHEREAS, in response to a request by City Council Member
Whitehead to review the sign ordinance provisions concerning low
profile signs, the City Council of Salt Lake City, Utah, has held
public hearings before its own body and before the Planning
Commission, and has taken into consideration citizen testimony.
Pursuant to these deliberations, the Council has concluded that
the proposed amendments to Section 21.92.385 and 21.92.485 are in
the best interest of the City.
Therefore, the City Council of Salt Lake City, Utah, hereby
adopts the following amendments to Sections 21.92.385 and .485.
Be it ordained by the City Council of Salt Lake City, Utah:
SECTION 1. That Section 21.92.385 be, and the same hereby
is, amended to read as follows:
21.92.385 Low -profile signs.

A. Business, Commercial and Industrial Zones. Low -profile
on -premises or identification signs will be allowed in all
business, commercial and industrial zoning districts, provided
that these signs:
1. Must not be located in any required yard area or buffer
zone except that such sign may encroach no more than six feet
into the front yard setback so long as it does not cross the
property line.

3. Shall be limited to a maximum of four feet in height
from established grade except where located within required
landscaped front yard setback and within thirty feet (30') of an
intersection in which case the maximum height shall be three (3)
feet.

B. Residential, Research and Development and Hospital
Zones. Low -profile identification signs will be allowed in
residential, research and development and hospital zoning
districts subject to the conditions of Section 21.92.485
provided that these signs:
1. Must not be located in any required yard area or buffer
zone except that such sign may encroach no more than six feet
into the front yard setback so long as it does not cross the
property line.
2. Shall be incorporated into a landscape design or
scheme, or planter box;
3. Shall be limited to a maximum of four feet in height
from established grade except where located within required
landscaped front yard setback and within thirty feet (30') of an
intersection in which case the maximum height shall be three (3)
feet.

4. Shall be limited to thirty-four (34) square feet in
area;
5. Shall be limited to only one sign per site except within
the R-D Research Development District which is limited to one per
street frontage;
6. Shall contain no animation;
7. May be illuminated from within the sign or externally.
SECTION 2. That Section 21.92.485 be, and the same hereby
is, amended to read as follows:
21.91.485 Permitted signs-- * * *

E. Identification Signs. Identification signs are allowed
in each residential zone as follows:

5. R-D Research Development District. One flat,
nonanimated sign not to exceed six square feet in area for each
fifty feet, or major portion thereof, of building frontage,
except that when a building has a frontage on more than one
dedicated street, there can be one sign, the size determined as
outlined herein, for each face of the building having street
frontage. No additional signs shall be allowed anywhere on or in
the building that are visible from the street. All
identification signs shall conform to the architecture and the
scale of the building and shall be in keeping with the character
of the main building. Said signs shall be allowed either flat on

the face of the main building or as a low -profile type sign.
6. Trailer District. * * *
F. Low profile identification signs. In addition to the
signage otherwise allowed low profile identification signs are
allowed as follows:
1. All residential zones. Churches, schools or residential
planned unit developments may have one.
2. R-3A, R-5, R-6 and R-7 multiple family. Multiple family
dwellings on more than one acre may have one.
3. R-7, hospital and R-H/nonresidential. Hospitals,
offices and other allowed or conditional nonresidential uses may
have one.
4. R-D Research Development District. Allowed or
conditional uses may have one per street frontage.
5. Trailer District. Trailer courts larger than 2.5 acres
may have one.
G. Service Signs.

SECTION 3. This ordinance shall take effect on its first
publication.
