RE: Ranked Choice Voting without a Primary for the 2025 Municipal Election
Staff note: The Municipal Alternative Voting Methods Pilot Project is the term in state law that authorizes
ranked choice voting for municipalities that chose to participate. Salt Lake City used ranked choice voting, also
called instant runoff voting, in the 2021 and 2023 municipal elections without a primary. 2025 is the last year
the City could use ranked choice voting unless state law changed.
MOTION 1 – ADOPT THE RESOLUTION TO USE RANKED CHOICE VOTING
I move that the Council adopt a resolution requesting Salt Lake City’s participation in the Municipal Alternative
Voting Methods Pilot Project to use ranked choice voting for the 2025 municipal election.
MOTION 2 – NOT ADOPT RESOLUTION
I move that the Council proceed to the next agenda item.
