BOX 145476, SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH 84114-5476 SLCCOUNCIL.COM TEL 801-535-7600 FAX 801-535-7651 COUNCIL STAFF MEMO CITY COUNCIL of SALT LAKE CITY TO:City Council Members FROM:Brian Fullmer, Policy Analyst DATE:May 5, 2026 RE: Honorary Street Renaming of a Portion of 500 South The Council is considering adopting a resolution honorarily renaming the City-owned portion of 500 South between State Street and 700 East “Dolores Huerta Boulevard” recognizing Ms. Huerta for her work as an American labor leader and feminist activist. She co-founded the National Farm Workers Association and is best known for organizing farm workers, leading nationwide grape boycotts, coining the term “Si, se puede” (Yes, we can), and fighting for better wages and working conditions. This section of 500 South along with a UDOT owned portion of the street west of State Street to 500 West was honorarily named “Cesar Chavez Boulevard” in 2002. Removing street signs and changing the honorary name of the street on the UDOT portion of 500 South would be a separate process overseen by UDOT. In early 2026 accusation of abuse by Cesar Chavez prompted review of the honorary street name. The City Council recommends changing the honorary street name to recognize Dolores Huerta. Item Schedule:
