RE: Indefinite Closure of 7200 West Between I-80 and California Avenue
BRIEFING UPDATE
Administration staff briefed the Council April 7, 2026 on a proposal to indefinitely continue the closure of
7200 West that has been in place since 2024. The closure has been effective at mitigating unsafe conditions
and preventing illegal dumping in the area that caused negative environmental impacts.
Council Members asked what led to the illegal dumping in this location. With its proximity to the landfill,
some people would dump trash there when the landfill was closed. Cost savings were another likely factor.
A Council Member noted the area is greatly improved due to the closure. They suggested additional signage
in the area could be an effective additional deterrent. A question was raised about “no access” signage on
the freeway. The Administration said not all access to 7200 West is closed and UDOT has not indicated a
desire for the signage.
