001 of 2019 - Hidden Hollow Natural Area; Ty's Garden R 19-1 R 19-4 RESOLUTION No. 1 of 2019 (Naming a portion of the Hidden Hollow Natural Area as Ty's Garden) WHEREAS, Salt Lake City Code Chapter 3.65 provides that the City may name certain parcels of City-owned land after an individual, an organization, or a group of similarly situated individuals; and WHEREAS, under Chapter 3.65 land, regardless of acreage, is considered a major asset the naming of which generally requires City Council approval; and WHEREAS, the Administration has requested that the City Council name a portion of the east side of Hidden Hollow Natural Area as"Ty's Garden"to honor Dr. Ty Harrison,professor emeritus at Westminster University, for his lasting contributions to the natural world in Hidden Hollow Natural Area and around the Salt Lake Valley,which have enhanced the quality of life and well-being of Salt Lake City; and WHEREAS, Dr. Harrison worked closely with local educators, the Parley's Trail Coalition, and staff at Utah Open Lands,to establish a riparian forest enhancement project in the easternmost area of Hidden Hollow. Dr. Harrison was actively engaged in the natural enhancement of many Salt Lake City natural areas, and was a committed advocate for the restoration of plants and ecosystems native to the Salt Lake Valley. Dr. Harrison was an invaluable resource for myriad open space projects, and the planting and seeding plans for the Fife Wetlands Preserve, Wasatch Hollow Preserve,Hidden Hollow Natural Area, and many other areas; and WHEREAS, Dr. Harrison passed away in 2017, and Utah Open Lands proposed that the riparian forest enhancement area developed with the assistance of Dr. Harrison be named"Ty's Garden" as City recognition of and as a tribute to his lasting contributions; and 1 WHEREAS, this naming proposal is consistent with the family consent requirements and the context and naming requirements of Salt Lake City Code Chapter 3.65; and WHEREAS, the City has obtained any necessary consents to the naming; and WHEREAS, the City's Parks,Natural Lands, Urban Forestry & Trails Citizen Advisory Board reviewed the proposed naming of Ty's Garden and unanimously recommended that the City Council formally approve the naming of the area as Ty's Garden; and NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of Salt Lake City, Utah, that a portion of the east side of the Hidden Hollow Natural Area be named as "Ty's Garden" in recognition of and to honor Dr. Ty Harrison for his lasting contributions to the natural world in Hidden Hollow Natural Area and around the Salt Lake Valley, which have enhanced the quality of life and well-being of Salt Lake City.
